Study Notes — Genesis 46
4 sectionsGenesis 46 marks a pivotal moment in redemptive history as Jacob and his entire household journey to Egypt to be reunited with Joseph. Before departing Canaan, God reassures Jacob with a divine promise that this migration is part of His sovereign plan and that He will never abandon His people. The chapter then records the names of all who descended into Egypt, establishing the foundation for what will become the nation of Israel, before concluding with the emotional reunion of Joseph and his father, and Joseph's preparation for their settlement in Goshen.
Jacob begins his journey to Egypt by stopping at Beersheba, the place where Abraham and Isaac had encountered the Lord (21:33; 26:23–25). There he offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac (v. 1). This act reveals Jacob's piety and his desire to seek the Lord's guidance before undertaking such a significant relocation. That night, God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night (v. 2). God addresses Jacob by his covenant name "Israel" and gives him a fourfold assurance: He will make Jacob a great nation in Egypt (v. 3); He will personally accompany them (v. 4a); He will bring them out again (v. 4b); and Joseph will be present to close Jacob's eyes in death, signifying a natural, blessed end (v. 4c). This promise addresses Jacob's natural fears about leaving the Promised Land. The patriarchal promises are not cancelled but will be fulfilled through an unexpected route. Jacob obeys, and his sons carried Jacob their father...in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent (v. 5), demonstrating both Jacob's age and Joseph's power in Egypt.
Application: When God calls us to difficult obedience, He often precedes it with assurance of His presence and faithfulness. Jacob's example teaches us to seek God in worship before making major life decisions.
Verses 6–7 summarize the entire family's departure with all their possessions. The detailed genealogy that follows (vv. 8–25) lists the sons of Jacob by their mother: Leah's sons (vv. 8–15), Zilpah's sons (vv. 16–18), Rachel's sons (vv. 19–22), Dan and Naphtali from Bilhah (vv. 23–25). These lists establish the foundation of the twelve tribes of Israel. Notably, Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan (v. 12), linking back to Judah's history (38:7–10). The final census counts threescore and six direct descendants (v. 26), plus Joseph's two sons born in Egypt, totaling threescore and ten (v. 27)—seventy souls. This number becomes symbolically significant in Jewish tradition.
Application: God cares about the individual names and identities of His people. The careful genealogical record reminds us that every believer is known and valued by God, not merely a statistic.
Joseph receives advance notice through Judah (v. 28) and made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen (v. 29). When they embrace, Joseph fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while (v. 29)—a deeply human moment of reconciliation. Jacob's response, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive (v. 30), echoes Simeon's words at Jesus' presentation (Luke 2:29). Joseph then demonstrates administrative wisdom by preparing his family for their interview with Pharaoh. He counsels them to be honest about their occupation as shepherds and to request settlement in Goshen, for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians (v. 34). This cultural insight ensures their separation and protection.
Application: Joseph's honesty combined with cultural awareness shows wisdom in witness. We need not compromise truth, but we may adapt our approach to cultural contexts.
Genesis 46 teaches us that God's sovereignty encompasses even our fears and uncertainties. Jacob's journey to Egypt was not a departure from God's plan but a crucial step toward fulfilling the Abrahamic covenant. Today, believers often face unexpected paths that seem to contradict their expectations. Like Jacob, we are invited to worship, seek God's assurance, and trust that He walks with us even into unfamiliar territory.
