Study Notes — Genesis 47
5 sectionsGenesis 47 narrates Joseph's presentation of his family to Pharaoh and their settlement in Egypt during the great famine. The chapter unfolds in two major movements: first, Joseph secures Pharaoh's blessing for Jacob and his family to dwell in Goshen (verses 1–12), and second, it describes Joseph's management of Egypt's economic crisis through the famine years (verses 13–26). Finally, we see Jacob's flourishing in Egypt and his deathbed covenant with Joseph regarding his burial (verses 27–31). This chapter demonstrates God's providence in preserving His covenant people while also revealing how divine wisdom can reshape an entire nation's economy.
Joseph begins by formally notifying Pharaoh of his family's arrival in Goshen. He then presents five of his brothers to Pharaoh, who asks about their occupation. The brothers honestly answer that they are shepherds, and they respectfully request permission to settle in Goshen because the famine has devastated Canaan's pastures. Pharaoh's response is remarkably generous: he not only grants their request but invites Joseph to settle his entire family in "the best of the land" and even offers to make capable family members overseers of his cattle. This demonstrates how Joseph's integrity and faithful service had earned genuine favor with Egypt's ruler. God's hand is evident in opening doors that human effort alone could never accomplish.
Joseph brings his elderly father Jacob before Pharaoh. What strikes us is that Jacob, though younger in rank and status, blesses Pharaoh (verses 7 and 10)—a reversal that hints at the spiritual authority Jacob possessed through his covenant relationship with God. When Pharaoh asks Jacob's age, the patriarch responds with theological honesty: his life has been brief compared to his ancestors, and marked by hardship and struggle. Yet beneath this realism lies gratitude for God's sustaining grace. Jacob's blessing upon Pharaoh reflects the reality that God's covenant people carry spiritual authority; blessing flows through those who know the true God. Joseph then establishes his family in the land of Rameses with provision for all their households, fulfilling Pharaoh's command.
As the famine intensifies (verse 13), Joseph systematically acquires Egypt's wealth for Pharaoh. First, he collects all monetary wealth (verses 14–15). When money is exhausted, he trades grain for livestock (verses 16–17). In the second year, having acquired both animals and land, he effectively consolidates all Egyptian property to Pharaoh while requiring the people to become tenant farmers under a 20-percent tax arrangement (verses 18–24). This may seem harsh by modern standards, but it was actually merciful: the people retained 80 percent of harvests, seed for planting, and food for their families. Joseph transformed potential starvation into sustainable survival. Notably, the priests' lands were excluded (verse 22)—a detail suggesting respect for religious institutions. Verse 26 notes this arrangement became law "unto this day," indicating the narrator is reflecting on Egypt's historical tax system.
Israel prospers abundantly in Goshen (verse 27), fulfilling God's promise of multiplication. After living seventeen years in Egypt, the aging Jacob approaches death. He calls Joseph and makes him swear a sacred oath—placing Joseph's hand under his thigh, an ancient sign of binding covenant—that Joseph will bury him not in Egypt but in Canaan with his fathers (verses 29–30). Joseph agrees, and Jacob bows in worship upon his bed. This deathbed request reveals Jacob's unshakeable faith: despite Egypt's security and prosperity, his heart remained fixed on the Promised Land. His death would not mark the end of the covenant journey.
Genesis 47 teaches us that God's providence works through faithful service and integrity. Joseph's diligent work opened doors no favor-seeking could have opened. Moreover, Jacob's dying request reminds us that spiritual inheritance matters more than earthly comfort. Believers today should serve with excellence wherever God places us, knowing that true blessing comes through alignment with His purposes, not merely through material security.
