Ephesians 2
Study Notes — Ephesians 1
6 sectionsEphesians 1 is one of Scripture's most majestic passages, presenting a sweeping vision of God's plan of redemption accomplished in Christ. Paul opens his letter to the Ephesian church with an explosion of praise, celebrating the spiritual riches believers possess through their union with Jesus. The chapter divides naturally into two parts: first, a burst of blessing that recalls what God has done for us in Christ (verses 1–14), and second, Paul's prayer that believers would understand the magnitude of these blessings and God's power (verses 15–23). Together, these passages establish the theological foundation for all that follows in Ephesians: we are saved, secure, and seated in heavenly places with Christ.
Paul identifies himself as an apostle appointed by God's will—not by human choice or ambition, but by divine calling. He addresses the saints (holy ones) at Ephesus, emphasizing that all Christians, not just clergy, are set apart for God. His greeting of grace and peace reflects the fusion of Greek and Hebrew blessing traditions, anchored in both God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. This opening establishes that our standing before God rests entirely on Christ's work and God's gracious choice, not our own merit.
Paul erupts into doxology: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!" He declares that God has already blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places—not in the distant future, but now, in Christ. The phrase "before the foundation of the world" (verse 4) reveals a staggering truth: God chose us in Christ before creation itself. This election was not based on foreseen faith, but according to His good pleasure, to make us holy and blameless before Him in love. Verse 5 adds that God predestined us to adoption as His children through Jesus Christ. This is not cold determinism but warm predestination—the loving choice of a Father. All of this is designed to bring praise to His glorious grace (verse 6), in which He has made us fully accepted in the Beloved.
In Christ we have redemption through His blood and forgiveness of sins (verse 7)—the concrete, historical purchase of our salvation through the cross. God has lavished His wisdom and prudence upon us (verse 8), revealing the mystery of His will: His ultimate plan to gather all things under Christ's headship in the dispensation of the fullness of times (verse 10). This cosmic reconciliation—everything in heaven and earth united in Christ—is the goal toward which history moves. It begins now through the Church but culminates in Christ's ultimate reign.
Believers have obtained an inheritance, appointed according to God's purpose (verse 11). When we trust in Christ and hear the gospel, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit (verse 13)—not as a future promise, but as present possession. This seal is the earnest (Greek: arrabōn, a down payment) guaranteeing our complete redemption. The Spirit Himself is God's pledge that He will finish what He started in us.
Learning of the Ephesians' faith and love, Paul prays they would receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation—not new doctrine, but illumination to grasp what they already possess. He asks that "the eyes of [their] understanding" be enlightened to know three things: the hope of God's calling, the riches of their inheritance, and God's exceeding power toward believers (verses 18–19). This power is demonstrated in Christ's resurrection, exaltation, and universal authority (verses 20–21). Christ is head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him (verses 22–23).
Ephesians 1 reminds us that our salvation is not tentative or based on our performance—it is eternally secure, chosen before time, purchased by Christ's blood, and sealed by the Spirit. When doubts about God's love or our standing arise, we must return to these truths. Our calling is to let the Spirit illuminate our hearts to grasp our true identity and inheritance in Christ, and to live in praise and adoration of the God who chose and redeemed us.
