Ezekiel 2
Study Notes — Ezekiel 1
5 sectionsEzekiel chapter 1 records one of Scripture's most extraordinary encounters with the presence and glory of God. Writing from exile by the river Chebar in Babylon, the priest Ezekiel receives an overwhelming vision designed to assure the captive people of Israel that God's throne has not been abandoned—He remains sovereign, mobile, and present even in judgment. The chapter introduces the four living creatures and the wheels of divine providence that will appear throughout Ezekiel's prophecies, ultimately pointing to God's transcendent holiness and the future restoration of His people.
Ezekiel dates his vision with precision: the thirtieth year of his life, in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin's captivity. He is standing among the Jewish exiles by the river Chebar when the heavens were opened (verse 1). This phrase signals a dramatic invasion of the divine into the human realm—God is about to break through the ordinary sky to reveal His extraordinary presence. Ezekiel is identified as a priest, a detail emphasizing his role as a mediator and intercessor. Most significantly, verse 3 tells us that the word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel and the hand of the LORD was upon him. This divine initiative and empowerment would characterize Ezekiel's entire ministry: he did not choose this calling; God seized him for it.
From the north comes a whirlwind—a fitting image for divine judgment and power (verse 4). Embedded in this storm is fire infolding itself, surrounded by brilliant light. From this theophany (appearance of God) emerge four living creatures of extraordinary appearance. Each has the likeness of a man (verse 5), yet possesses four faces—human, lion, ox, and eagle (verse 10)—and four wings. Their feet gleam like burnished brass (verse 7), and they possess human hands (verse 8). These creatures are not meant to be decoded as specific symbols but rather to overwhelm the seer with their otherness and majesty. They move with perfect unity and precision, always going straight forward, turning not to the left or right (verses 9, 12), responsive only to the spirit's leading. Their appearance blazes like burning coals (verse 13), and they move with the speed of lightning (verse 14). This imagery emphasizes that whatever these beings are, they belong entirely to God's realm and move in perfect obedience to His direction.
Accompanying the living creatures are wheels—wheels within wheels—full of eyes, signifying God's all-seeing omniscience and constant vigilance (verses 15–18). Remarkably, the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels (verse 20). The wheels move in perfect synchronization with the creatures; they lift up when the creatures lift up and stand when they stand. This vision teaches that divine providence is not distant or impersonal. God's governance is active, attentive, and coordinated. The wheels' multiple eyes suggest that nothing escapes His attention—He sees all things and directs all movements according to His sovereign will.
Above the firmament (an expanse like crystalline ice, verse 22) sits a throne of sapphire, and upon it is the likeness as the appearance of a man (verse 26). This is the throne of God Himself, ringed with the glory of divine fire and light (verses 27–28). When Ezekiel sees this majesty—the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD—he falls on his face in reverent awe. God is utterly holy, transcendent, and glorious beyond measure.
In seasons of difficulty and uncertainty, Ezekiel's vision reminds us that God's throne is secure and His governance complete. Though the world seems chaotic, the wheels of providence turn perfectly under His control. Like Ezekiel among the captives, we too can know that our God is neither surprised nor distant, but present, aware, and sovereign over all circumstances.
