Study Notes — Acts 1
5 sectionsActs chapter 1 forms the essential bridge between the Gospel narratives and the birth of the Church. Luke addresses Theophilus with a reminder that his Gospel account covered Jesus' earthly ministry, and now he turns to what the risen Christ accomplished through His apostles after His resurrection. This opening chapter establishes the foundation for the entire book: the Ascension of Jesus, the promise of the Holy Spirit's empowerment, and the commissioning of the disciples to be witnesses to the world. The chapter concludes with the apostles' obedience as they gather in Jerusalem and replace Judas with Matthias, demonstrating their readiness for the coming Pentecost.
Luke reminds Theophilus that his Gospel detailed what Jesus "began both to do and teach" until His ascension (verse 1). The phrase "began" is significant—it implies that the Church's work continues what Christ started. After His resurrection, Jesus spent forty days with the apostles, providing "infallible proofs" of His aliveness (verse 3). This wasn't a vision or hallucination; the risen Lord ate, taught, and communed with His disciples. Most importantly, He commanded them to wait in Jerusalem for "the promise of the Father"—the baptism with the Holy Ghost (verses 4–5). John's water baptism was preparatory; Jesus' disciples would receive the Spirit's power, which John himself could not bestow.
Application: The apostles' obedience to wait, rather than rushing ahead with their own plans, reminds us that God's timing in spiritual empowerment matters more than our eagerness to serve.
The disciples ask whether Jesus will restore Israel's kingdom "at this time" (verse 6). This reveals their lingering misunderstanding: they still envisioned a political deliverance. Jesus' response is gentle but clear—it is not for them to know the "times or seasons" that the Father has reserved (verse 7). Instead, Jesus redirects their focus to their true mission: they will receive power through the Holy Ghost and become witnesses to Him in expanding circles—Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the earth (verse 8). The word translated "power" (Greek: dynamis) carries the idea of explosive, transformative ability. Their task was not political restoration but gospel proclamation.
Application: Like the disciples, we must resist the temptation to speculate about God's future plans and instead focus on the clear commission He has given us today: to testify to Christ's saving power wherever He places us.
As Jesus speaks, He is lifted up and hidden by a cloud—the physical Ascension witnessed by all (verse 9). Two angelic messengers appear, asking why the disciples gaze heavenward (verses 10–11). Their message is profoundly comforting: "This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." The Ascension guarantees the Second Coming. The disciples then return from the Mount of Olives—a sabbath day's journey away—to Jerusalem (verse 12), obedient to Jesus' command to wait there.
In Jerusalem's upper room, the eleven apostles gather with the women, including Mary, Jesus' mother, and His brothers—a remarkable detail showing that Jesus' own family believed in Him after the Resurrection (verses 13–14). About 120 believers are present. Peter, the restored leader, addresses them concerning the necessity of replacing Judas. Peter cites Psalm 69:25 and 109:8, showing that Judas's betrayal and fall were foreknown in Scripture (verses 16–20). They propose two candidates and pray, asking the Lord who knows all hearts to reveal His choice (verses 23–24). The lot falls to Matthias, who is numbered with the eleven apostles (verses 25–26).
Application: The disciples' commitment to prayer, Scripture, and seeking the Lord's guidance in practical decisions models how the early Church—and we today—should make choices. Even in uncertainty, prayerful dependence on God's wisdom brings peace and assurance.
Acts 1 calls modern believers to embrace the same pattern: trust in the risen Christ's presence, wait expectantly for God's empowerment through His Spirit, resist the urge to solve spiritual problems with worldly methods, and commit ourselves to faithful witness in our own spheres of influence. Like the 120 in that upper room, we too are called to prayer, unity, and patient obedience as we await the fullness of God's promises.
