Study Notes — Ezekiel 23
5 sectionsEzekiel 23 presents one of Scripture's most sobering allegories of spiritual unfaithfulness. God commands the prophet to declare judgment against the two kingdoms of Israel and Judah, symbolized as two sisters—Aholah (Samaria, the northern kingdom) and Aholibah (Jerusalem, the southern kingdom)—who have abandoned their covenant relationship with God to pursue idolatry and alliances with pagan nations. The chapter traces their escalating rebellion from Egypt through Assyria to Babylon, showing how their spiritual adultery invites divine judgment. This passage demonstrates God's jealous love for His people and the inevitable consequences of forsaking Him.
God presents two sisters born of one mother—representing the united monarchy that divided after Solomon's reign. Both began their unfaithfulness in Egypt (v. 3), symbolizing their early tendency toward idolatry even before entering Canaan. Aholah (Samaria) becomes the first to openly play the harlot, abandoning her covenant relationship with God ("when she was mine", v. 5). Her infatuation with the Assyrians—described in terms of physical attraction to their military power and prestige (vv. 5–6)—illustrates how political alliances often mask spiritual compromise. Rather than trusting God, she relied on human strength and adopted the gods of her lovers. The consequence is severe: God delivers her into the hands of those she loved (v. 9). Assyria conquered the northern kingdom in 722 BC, fulfilling this prophecy with devastating thoroughness.
Tragically, Judah (Aholibah) observes her sister's fall yet becomes more corrupt (v. 11). She first imitates Samaria's attraction to Assyria, but then escalates her unfaithfulness by chasing the Babylonians. The vivid description of painted images on walls (vv. 14–15) captures how visual allure and cultural glamour seduce God's people away from covenant faithfulness. Aholibah doesn't just passively receive these influences; she sends messengers to Babylon (v. 16), actively pursuing relationships with pagan powers. The language describing her lovers as having flesh "as the flesh of asses" (v. 20) emphasizes their base, animalistic nature—a stark contrast to the nobility she imagines. Her nostalgia for Egypt (v. 19) reveals a heart that never fully committed to God's ways.
God declares He will use Judah's beloved allies as instruments of her punishment (v. 22). The detailed military imagery—chariots, shields, and warriors surrounding her (vv. 23–24)—paints a terrifying picture of Babylon's siege in 586 BC. The judgment includes physical humiliation, loss of children, and complete desolation (vv. 25–26). Most significantly, God promises to make her lewdness cease (v. 27), breaking her obsession with foreign gods through the crucible of exile. The metaphor of drinking her sister's cup (vv. 31–33) conveys that Judah will experience the full measure of God's wrath, just as Samaria did.
The closing verses summarize their abominations: adultery against God, child sacrifice to idols, and desecration of God's sanctuary (vv. 37–39). Their judgment serves as a public warning to all women—and all people—not to abandon covenant loyalty to God (v. 48).
Ezekiel 23 warns believers against spiritual adultery. Just as Israel and Judah pursued false sources of security and satisfaction, we too face temptation to trust in worldly power, wealth, or cultural trends instead of Christ. The chapter calls us to examine our hearts: Are we truly committed to God, or are we flirting with idols of our age? God's jealousy for us is an expression of His covenant love. Repentance and renewed devotion to Him alone protect us from the consequences of unfaithfulness.
