Ezekiel 20

Ezekiel 20 presents a sobering account of Israel's persistent rebellion throughout her history, from the exodus from Egypt through the wilderness wanderings to settlement in Canaan. When the elders of Israel approach the prophet seeking God's guidance, the Lord refuses their inquiry and instead commands Ezekiel to confront them with the hard truth: their ancestors—and they themselves—have repeatedly turned from God to idolatry despite His faithful covenant mercies. Yet even amid judgment, God's name and glory remain His primary concern, and the chapter concludes with a promise of future restoration and sanctification.

Certain elders of Israel come to Ezekiel seeking God's word, but the Lord refuses to be consulted by them (verse 3). Instead of granting their request, God commands the prophet to become a judge, exposing the abominations of their fathers. This refusal is striking: spiritual inquiry from a hardened heart meets a closed heaven. The elders wanted quick counsel; God wanted conviction. This pattern—seeking God's favor while harboring unrepentant sin—remains a recurring human tendency that blocks genuine communion with God.

The Lord recalls His sovereign choice of Israel and His redemptive acts in Egypt (verses 5-6). He explicitly commanded them to abandon Egyptian idolatry (verse 7), yet they rebelled immediately (verse 8). Nevertheless, God acted for His name's sake—not for their merit—delivering them from Egypt and establishing His covenant through law, statutes, and the Sabbath sign (verses 11-12). This theme of God's name-consciousness (His glory and honor) becomes the recurring hinge upon which His mercy turns throughout the chapter.

Israel's pattern of disobedience continued in the wilderness. They rejected God's statutes and polluted His Sabbaths (verse 13). The Lord threatened judgment but again restrained Himself for the sake of His name's reputation among the nations (verse 14). Most remarkably, verse 17 declares that God's eye spared them from destruction—a phrase emphasizing God's compassionate restraint even when justice would seem warranted. God did not write Israel off; instead, He taught their children (verses 18-20) and, after further rebellion, withdrew His hand temporarily while preserving the covenant promise (verse 22).

When the second generation also rebelled, God pronounced a scattering among the nations (verse 23). Verse 25 presents a difficult passage: God gave them "statutes that were not good"—meaning He permitted idolatrous practices to run their full course as judicial judgment. Allowing people to pursue their own desires without restraint becomes itself a form of divine punishment (cf. Romans 1:24-28). God permitted abominable practices like child sacrifice to expose Israel's depravity and awaken them to His lordship (verse 26).

Ezekiel's contemporaries continue their fathers' pattern. They offer sacrifices at high places and practice child sacrifice (verses 28-31). The word "Bamah" (high place) signifies false worship. Despite this ongoing defilement, God again refuses their inquiry. This reinforces a critical principle: God will not bless or guide those pursuing deliberate, unrepentant sin.

God will rule Israel with a mighty hand and bring them through wilderness judgment—a future exile—where He will plead with them face-to-face (verses 33-36). He will purge out rebels but restore a faithful remnant to the land (verses 37-38). Most beautifully, verses 43-44 promise that restored Israel will loathe their former ways and recognize God's grace acted not according to their wickedness but for His holy name's sake.

A brief oracle announces an all-consuming fire (verses 46-48), emphasizing total judgment. Ezekiel's humility in verse 49 shows his awareness that such stark words seem like mere parables to hardened hearers.
