John 2
Study Notes — John 1
7 sectionsJohn's Gospel opens with one of Scripture's most profound declarations: the Word (Jesus Christ) is eternal God who became flesh in human history. This prologue establishes Jesus as the divine Creator, the source of life and light, rejected by the world He made, yet offering salvation to all who believe in Him. The chapter then introduces John the Baptist's testimony and the calling of the first disciples, demonstrating how faith in Jesus begins—through witness, recognition, and personal encounter with the Savior.
John begins not with Jesus's birth but with His eternal existence. "In the beginning was the Word" echoes Genesis 1:1 but reveals that before creation itself, Jesus existed with God and was God. The Greek term logos (Word) carries profound meaning: it speaks of divine reason, revelation, and personal presence. Verses 3–4 declare that all creation came into being through Jesus, and in Him resides life itself—not mere biological existence, but the life that produces spiritual light for humanity. Verse 5 introduces a critical theme: light shining in darkness that the darkness cannot overcome. This describes not physical darkness but spiritual blindness and rebellion against God.
Application: When doubt about Jesus's deity arises, remember that John establishes His equality with God from the opening verse. Trust that the One who created all things can certainly redeem your life.
John the Baptist appears as a divinely sent forerunner whose sole purpose was to testify about Jesus, the true Light. Verse 8 clarifies that John himself was not the Messiah—an important historical note, since some of John's followers may have confused his role. John was a witness, not the object of faith.
Application: True spiritual leadership points others away from itself toward Jesus. Ask yourself: do you direct people to Christ, or subtly draw attention to yourself?
Verses 9–11 present the tragedy of the incarnation: Jesus, the world's Creator and Light, came to the world He made, yet the world did not recognize Him. His own people, Israel, rejected Him. This rejection was not accidental but reflects humanity's spiritual condition—we prefer darkness to light when light exposes our sin. Yet verse 12 pivots to grace: "as many as received him" gained the right to become God's children. This is not natural birth but spiritual rebirth, granted to those who believe in Jesus's name (His revealed character and authority).
Application: Rejection of Jesus by the world should not surprise us; it is the expected response of those who love darkness. But receiving Him opens the door to an entirely new identity as beloved children of God.
Verse 13 emphasizes that becoming God's child occurs through divine birth, not human effort, genealogy, or will. Then comes the climactic revelation: "the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us." The infinite God became human in Jesus Christ. John and the apostles "beheld his glory"—witnessing divine perfection in human form, "full of grace and truth." Grace speaks of undeserved kindness; truth speaks of reality revealed and promises fulfilled.
Application: The incarnation is not merely historical doctrine but the greatest act of love. God did not remain distant but entered our world in Jesus to redeem us personally.
John the Baptist reiterates that Jesus, though coming after him chronologically, "was before me" in eternal existence and superiority. Verse 16 declares that believers receive grace from Christ's fullness in unending measure. Verse 17 contrasts the old and new covenants: the law came through Moses but could only condemn; grace and truth—redemption itself—came through Jesus Christ. Finally, verse 18 states that no one has seen God's full essence, but Jesus, the only begotten Son, has made Him known through incarnate revelation.
Application: If you want to understand God's heart, look to Jesus. He is God's final and fullest self-disclosure.
Religious authorities questioned John about his identity and authority to baptize. John humbly denied being the Messiah, Elijah, or "that prophet," instead identifying himself as the voice prophesied in Isaiah 40:3—merely preparing the way. When asked why he baptized if he wasn't the Messiah, John pointed to the One standing among them unknown to them. Verse 27 describes John's humility: he was unworthy even to untie Jesus's sandals. On the next day, John identified Jesus as "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world"—a reference to sacrificial atonement. John then testified to witnessing the Spirit descend and remain upon Jesus, confirming Him as "the Son of God."
Application: Humility marked John's ministry. Greatness in God's kingdom means decreasing so that Christ may increase.
