Trinity

This article explains the biblical doctrine that there is one God, eternally existing in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each person is fully and equally God, yet there is only one God. This truth is not explicitly spelled out in a single verse but is derived from the whole counsel of Scripture.

The doctrine of the Trinity means that God is one in essence or being, but three in person. The Bible teaches that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God, and yet there are not three gods but one God. This is a mystery revealed in Scripture, not a contradiction.

1. There Is Only One God

The Scriptures repeatedly and emphatically declare that there is only one true God. No other being shares His divine essence. This oneness is absolute and exclusive.

2. The Father Is God

The Father is clearly identified as God. He is the one whom Jesus addressed as His Father in heaven. He is the source and author of all things.

3. The Son (Jesus Christ) Is God

The Scriptures ascribe divine names, attributes, works, and worship to the Son. He is called God, He is eternal, He created all things, He forgives sins, and He receives worship. To deny the Son’s deity is to deny the testimony of Scripture.

4. The Holy Spirit Is God

The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force but a divine person. He possesses the attributes of God, performs the works of God, and is called God. Lying to the Holy Spirit is equated with lying to God.

5. The Three Persons Are Distinct

The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father. They speak to one another, love one another, and act in distinct roles in creation, redemption, and sanctification. Yet they are never presented as separate gods.

6. The Three Persons Are One in Essence

The Son does the works of the Father. The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Christ and the Spirit of God. They share the same divine name, nature, and glory. To see the Son is to see the Father. To grieve the Holy Spirit is to grieve God. This unity of essence makes them one God.

Conclusion

The Trinity is not a contradiction (three Gods) nor a modalism (one person in three forms). It is the biblical truth that the one God exists eternally as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—three distinct persons, one divine essence. This doctrine is foundational to all other Christian teachings, including salvation, prayer, and worship.
