The Light as a Type of Christ

This article explains the biblical symbol and type of light, which throughout Scripture represents the Lord Jesus Christ as the revelation of God, the source of truth, holiness, and life. In the creation account, God said, "Let there be light." The psalmist declares that the Lord is his light and his salvation. Jesus declared, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." Christ is the true light that gives light to every man, and believers are called to reflect His light to the world.

1. Light as a Symbol of God's Presence and Glory

God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. The first creative act of God was to speak light into existence. God dwells in unapproachable light, clothed with light as with a garment. The glory of the Lord appeared as a consuming fire and as a brilliant light. The psalmist declares, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?" Light represents the holiness, truth, goodness, and presence of God. Darkness represents sin, ignorance, evil, and separation from God. Christ, being God, is the very essence of divine light.

2. The Light of Creation: Christ as the Agent of Light

In the beginning, God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. John declares that all things were made through Christ, and in Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light that shone on the first day of creation was not the sun, which was created on the fourth day. That primordial light came directly from God through Christ. Christ is the light that preceded the sun, the moon, and the stars. He is the source of all light, both physical and spiritual. As the sun illuminates the physical world, Christ illuminates the spiritual world.

3. The Light of the Tabernacle and Temple: The Shekinah Glory

The Tabernacle and later the Temple were filled with the glory of the Lord, a visible light that manifested God's presence. This light was called the Shekinah glory. The lampstand in the Holy Place provided continual light, but the Holy of Holies was lit only by the glory of God Himself. The psalmist writes, "For the Lord God is a sun and shield." The prophet Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up, and the seraphim cried, "Holy, holy, holy." This glorious light of God's presence is a type of Christ, who is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being.

4. The Light of the Word: A Lamp to the Feet

The psalmist declares, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." The Word of God illuminates the path of righteousness, exposes error, and reveals the will of God. Christ is the living Word. The Scriptures testify of Him. He is the light that the written Word reveals. To have the Word without Christ is to have a lamp without oil. But when Christ, the light of the Word, shines in the heart, the believer is guided into all truth.

5. Jesus Declares, "I Am the Light of the World"

Jesus spoke to the people, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." This declaration was made in the treasury of the temple, where the great golden lampstands burned. Christ claims to be the source of spiritual illumination. Before He came, the world sat in darkness. He is the light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. To follow Christ is to walk in the light, to be delivered from the darkness of sin, ignorance, and death.

6. The Light of Life: Salvation and Regeneration

Jesus said that those who follow Him "shall have the light of life." This light is not merely information but transformation. The light of life is the life of God imparted to the soul. It is regeneration, the new birth. Paul writes, "For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." As God said, "Let there be light" at creation, He says, "Let there be light" in the heart of every believer. The light of life is eternal life.

7. Believers as Lights in the World Reflecting Christ

Jesus said to His disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Believers do not generate their own light; they reflect the light of Christ. As the moon reflects the sun, so the church reflects the Son. The believer's good works are the visible expression of the invisible light of Christ within.

8. The Light That Exposes Darkness and Sin

Light exposes darkness. John writes, "This is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed." Christ's coming brought judgment in the sense that His light revealed the darkness of human hearts. Those who love sin flee from the light. Those who love truth come to the light. The light of Christ exposes every hidden thing and calls sinners to repentance.

9. The Light That Cannot Be Extinguished

The darkness has not overcome the light. Men crucified the Lord of glory, but the light was not extinguished. Christ rose from the dead, and His light shines forever. No power of hell, no scheme of man, no darkness of this world can put out the light of Christ. He is the true light that shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot comprehend it, cannot overcome it, cannot extinguish it. The light of Christ will shine throughout eternity. In the New Jerusalem, there is no need of the sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates it, and the Lamb is its light.

10. Walking in the Light: Fellowship with God and One Another

John writes, "If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin." Walking in the light means living in truth, honesty, and obedience. It means confessing sin rather than hiding it. It means living transparently before God and before fellow believers. The light of Christ not only saves but also sanctifies, bringing believers into fellowship with God and with each other.

Conclusion
Jesus Christ is the light of the world. He is the light of creation, the light of the Tabernacle, the light of the Word, and the light of life. In Him there is no darkness at all. All who follow Him shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life. Believers are called to reflect His light to a dark world. The darkness will never overcome His light. Walk in the light, as He is in the light, and the blood of Jesus Christ will cleanse you from all sin.
