Chapter Commentary — 1 Kings 6
Chapter Overview

Chapter Overview

First Kings chapter 6 records one of the most significant building projects in Old Testament history: the construction of Solomon's Temple. This passage provides detailed architectural specifications and materials used to create a house dedicated to the worship of the Lord God of Israel. Beyond the physical description, the chapter includes a crucial divine word to Solomon (verses 11-13), reminding him that God's presence and blessing depend upon obedience to His covenant. The temple's beauty and expense reflect the glory due to God, while its conditional nature teaches us that external worship must flow from internal devotion.

Verses 1–3: The Beginning and Overall Dimensions

Solomon begins construction in the fourth year of his reign, exactly 480 years after Israel's exodus from Egypt—a detail emphasizing divine timing and continuity in God's covenant purposes. The main temple building measures 60 cubits long (about 90 feet), 20 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. The porch (entrance vestibule) extends an additional 20 cubits in length and 10 cubits in depth. These proportions are modest compared to pagan temples of the era, yet perfectly suited to house God's presence. The precise measurements remind us that God values order, intentionality, and careful stewardship in His work.

Verses 4–10: Construction Details and Materials

Solomon's craftsmen construct the temple with meticulous care. The "windows of narrow lights" (v. 4) likely admit controlled amounts of light, fitting for a holy place. Surrounding chambers built against the walls provide storage and administrative space. Remarkably, all stone is dressed and finished before arrival at the site, so that "neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron" is heard during construction (v. 7). This silent building process symbolizes the orderly, peaceful establishment of God's house. The interior finishing includes cedar beams and boards—cedar being the most precious wood available, prized for its durability, fragrance, and beauty. These details underscore that God deserves our very best.

Verses 11–13: God's Word to Solomon

At the midpoint of construction, the Lord appears to Solomon with both a promise and a condition. God will dwell among Israel and not forsake them—if Solomon walks in God's statutes, executes His judgments, and keeps His commandments. This is the heart of the covenant relationship: blessing flows from obedience. The temple's grandeur cannot secure God's presence apart from faithful devotion. Solomon's later unfaithfulness (1 Kings 11) would prove how seriously God meant these words. This passage teaches us that religious buildings and practices are only meaningful when rooted in genuine submission to God's character and law.

Verses 14–22: Interior Decoration and Gold Overlay

The temple's interior is covered entirely with cedar, carved with cherubim, palm trees, and flowers—visible symbols of God's heavenly throne room brought to earth. The "oracle" (Holy of Holies) is a perfect cube of 20 cubits per side, the most sacred chamber where the ark of the covenant would rest. Solomon overlays the entire interior with pure gold, including the cedar altar and a golden partition before the oracle. Gold signifies God's eternal value and purity. Nothing was spared; the temple was Israel's greatest architectural achievement and most costly investment in worship.

Verses 23–35: The Cherubim and Doorways

Two ten-cubit olive-wood cherubim dominate the Holy of Holies, their wings spreading across the chamber (v. 27), overshadowing the ark below. Doors of olive wood—carved with cherubim, palm trees, and flowers, then overlaid with gold—control access to the sacred space. These heavenly guardians and elaborate gateways remind worshippers of the awesome holiness of God's presence and the privilege of drawing near.

Verses 36–38: Completion

The temple is completed in seven years (from the fourth to the eleventh year of Solomon's reign), built with precision according to its appointed design. The inner court features three rows of hewed stone and cedar beams—a foundation of strength and beauty.

Application for Today

Though we no longer worship in stone temples, 1 Kings 6 teaches that God deserves our wholehearted devotion, our finest resources, and our careful obedience. The temple's beauty points us to Christ, our greater High Priest and living Temple. As believers, our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). May we present ourselves to God with the same excellence, purity, and reverence that Solomon invested in his temple.
