Study Notes — 1 Kings 10
5 sections1 Kings 10 recounts the visit of the Queen of Sheba and paints a portrait of Solomon's unparalleled wealth, wisdom, and international renown. This chapter demonstrates the fulfillment of God's promise to Solomon and reveals how his God-given wisdom and prosperity made him a figure of global significance. However, it also subtly foreshadows the dangers of material excess, as Solomon's accumulation of riches and military hardware will eventually lead him away from wholehearted devotion to the Lord.
The Queen of Sheba travels a great distance specifically to test Solomon's wisdom with difficult questions. She arrives with extraordinary wealth—camels laden with spices, gold, and precious stones—demonstrating her own power and resources. When she meets Solomon, she finds that he answers all her questions (v. 3), and his wisdom leaves her breathless. Verse 5 tells us "there was no more spirit in her"—a phrase meaning she was overwhelmed, astonished, and speechless. What struck her most was not merely his answers, but the totality of his greatness: his wisdom, his magnificent palace, his lavish table, the order of his court, his servants' attire, and his processional ascent to the house of the Lord.
Application: The Queen's testimony reminds us that true wisdom is recognizable and compelling. When we walk in God's wisdom and order our lives according to His Word, others cannot help but take notice.
The Queen openly admits that the reports she heard in her own land were true, yet the reality exceeded the rumor—"the half was not told me" (v. 7). She blesses Solomon's God and acknowledges that the LORD established him as king to execute judgment and justice (v. 9). This pagan ruler recognizes the hand of God in Solomon's success. In response to her amazement, she gives Solomon 120 talents of gold, precious spices, and stones—yet even this enormous gift is noted as incomparable (v. 10).
Application: Even those outside God's covenant people can recognize His work and be moved to honor Him. The Queen's blessing of the Lord God and her acknowledgment of Solomon's divine mandate demonstrate that God's greatness is visible to all who have eyes to see.
Hiram's fleet brings gold from Ophir along with almug wood and precious stones. Solomon uses this wood for temple pillars, his own house, and musical instruments (v. 12), dedicating these materials both to God's house and his own glory. He generously provides for the Queen of Sheba, giving her all she desires plus additional royal gifts before she returns home (v. 13).
Application: Solomon's use of resources for both the Lord's house and wise administration shows balanced stewardship—honoring God while managing earthly responsibility.
The text enumerates Solomon's astronomical riches in stunning detail: 666 talents of gold annually (v. 14), gold targets and shields (vv. 16-17), an ivory throne overlaid with gold and surrounded by lions (vv. 18-20), vessels of pure gold throughout (v. 21), trading fleets bringing exotic goods (v. 22), and horses imported from Egypt (vv. 28-29). Verse 23 summarizes: Solomon "exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom." Silver became so abundant it was "nothing accounted of" (v. 27)—worthless due to overabundance.
Application: While this demonstrates God's blessing, the accumulation of chariots, horses, and military hardware (v. 26) subtly contradicts Deuteronomy 17:16, where kings are warned against multiplying horses. Material blessing can become a snare if it turns the heart from trust in God alone.
Solomon's story teaches us that God does bless faithfulness with abundance, and His wisdom should characterize our lives visibly. Yet we must remain vigilant: prosperity can gradually redirect our hearts from God toward confidence in earthly resources. Ask yourself: Does your success draw others toward the Lord, or toward envy of your possessions? Use whatever God grants you—whether much or little—to honor Him first and serve others generously.
