Study Notes — Luke 1
7 sectionsLuke chapter 1 opens the Gospel narrative with the announcement of two miraculous births that will reshape Israel's spiritual destiny. Through eyewitness testimony carefully recorded by Luke, we encounter Zacharias and Elisabeth, an elderly couple of deep faith, and Mary, a young woman of Nazareth, both chosen by God for extraordinary roles in redemptive history. The chapter reveals how God breaks silence, overcomes barrenness, and prepares the way for His Son's coming through the birth of John the Baptist and the incarnation of Jesus Christ. This is a chapter soaked in prayer, divine purpose, and the joy of those who encounter God's faithfulness.
Luke begins by explaining why he is writing this Gospel account. Many others have attempted to record the life and teachings of Jesus (v. 1), drawing from those who were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word (v. 2). Luke himself has carefully investigated these events from the beginning and now writes in order to Theophilus so that he might be certain of what he has been taught (vv. 3-4). This opening affirms that the Gospel is grounded in historical fact and apostolic testimony, not mythology or legend. Luke's methodical approach reassures us that we can trust the accounts that follow.
Application: Our faith rests not on blind belief but on reliable historical testimony. We can confidently share the Gospel knowing it is anchored in eyewitness accounts.
In the days of King Herod, a faithful priest named Zacharias served in the temple. He and his wife Elisabeth were righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless (v. 6)—yet they had no children, and both were elderly (v. 7). When Zacharias's turn came to burn incense in the temple (v. 9), the entire nation stood in prayer outside (v. 10). This moment of priestly duty becomes the setting for divine intervention.
Application: Faithfulness in small, consistent obedience pleases God. Zacharias had served faithfully for years in obscurity; God was watching and had not forgotten his heart's prayer.
An angel of the Lord suddenly appears to Zacharias at the altar of incense (v. 11). Fear grips the old priest (v. 12), but the angel reassures him: thy prayer is heard (v. 13). Elisabeth will conceive and bear a son to be named John. This child will be great in the sight of the Lord (v. 15), filled with the Holy Ghost even from the womb (v. 15). He will turn many to the Lord and go before him in the spirit and power of Elias—that is, as a prophet like Elijah—to prepare a people for the Lord (vv. 16-17).
Application: God hears the faithful prayers of His people, even when answered long after they are prayed. John's coming prepares the way for Jesus; similarly, our intercession often bears fruit in ways we cannot yet see.
Despite the angel's promise, Zacharias asks for a sign: Whereby shall I know this? (v. 18). Gabriel responds by identifying himself as one who stands before God and reveals that Zacharias will become dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words (v. 20). When Zacharias emerges from the temple, the people perceive he has seen a vision, for he cannot speak (vv. 21-22).
Application: Unbelief has consequences, but they are redemptive. Zacharias's silence becomes a sign that humbles him and ultimately strengthens his faith when John is born.
After his temple duties end, Zacharias returns home, and Elisabeth conceives (v. 24). She hides herself for five months, praising God for removing her reproach (v. 25). Her barrenness, a source of shame in Jewish culture, is now reversed by the Lord's mercy.
