Elizabeth

Elizabeth was the wife of Zechariah and mother of John the Baptist, a righteous woman whose faith was rewarded when God answered her prayer for a child in her old age.

Overview

Elizabeth was a godly woman from a priestly family who lived during the time of King Herod. Though she and her husband Zechariah were righteous and blameless before God, they remained childless until advanced in years. When the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah in the temple, he announced that Elizabeth would bear a son who would prepare the way for the Messiah.

Key Scriptures

"Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord" (Luke 1:6, ESV).

"And when Zechariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, 'Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John'" (Luke 1:12-13, ESV).

"Now Elizabeth's full time came for her to give birth, and she bore a son" (Luke 1:57, NASB).

Application

Elizabeth's life demonstrates that faithful obedience and patient trust in God's promises, even through long seasons of disappointment, ultimately lead to witnessing His miraculous work.
