Matthew 2
Study Notes — Matthew 1
5 sectionsMatthew 1 establishes the foundational truth that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah of Israel, the long-awaited King descended from David and heir to the covenant promises made to Abraham. The genealogy traces Jesus's legal lineage through Joseph, demonstrating His rightful claim to the throne of David, while verses 18–25 reveal the miraculous circumstances of His birth—conceived by the Holy Spirit in the virgin Mary, yet acknowledged and named by Joseph. This opening chapter answers the crucial question: Who is Jesus? He is Emmanuel, God with us, the Savior who has come to deliver His people from their sins.
Matthew opens with "the book of the generation of Jesus Christ" (v. 1)—a phrase echoing Genesis 5:1 and establishing that what follows is an official record of descent. By identifying Jesus as "the son of David, the son of Abraham," Matthew immediately connects Jesus to the two greatest covenant promises in the Old Testament: God's promise to Abraham of blessing for all nations (Genesis 12:3), and His promise to David of an eternal kingdom (2 Samuel 7:12–13). The genealogy then traces this line from Abraham through Isaac, Jacob, and Judah. Notice that verses 3 and 5 mention women—Tamar and Rahab—whose inclusion is significant. These were women of questionable reputation in the world's eyes, yet God used them in the line of the Messiah. This teaches us that God's grace works through imperfect people and that our past does not disqualify us from being part of His purposes.
Verse 6 marks a pivotal moment: "Jesse begat David the king." David's establishment as king fulfills the promise that the Messiah would be born from his line. The genealogy continues through the monarchy, then passes through the tragedy of the Babylonian exile (v. 11–12), yet God's line is never broken. Remarkably, verse 6 mentions that David's son Solomon was born "of her that had been the wife of Urias"—referring to Bathsheba. Again, we see grace at work: the Messiah's line includes a woman who had committed adultery, reminding us that Jesus came not to the righteous but to sinners. The genealogy concludes at verse 16 with Joseph, described as "the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus." The specific wording is careful: it is Mary, not Joseph, who bore Jesus, anticipating the explanation of the virgin birth.
Matthew reveals the structure of the genealogy: three periods of fourteen generations (Abraham to David; David to Babylon; Babylon to Christ). The number fourteen is twice seven (the number of completion or perfection), suggesting that God's redemptive plan has unfolded in perfect, purposeful stages. History is not random—it moves toward Christ.
Matthew now explains the circumstances of Jesus's conception and birth. Mary was "espoused" (betrothed) to Joseph when she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit (v. 18). Joseph's initial response was gracious—being "a just man," he resolved to "put her away privily" rather than expose her to public shame. But an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream (v. 20), commanding him to take Mary as his wife and assuring him that the child was indeed conceived by the Holy Spirit. The angel then reveals Jesus's purpose: "He shall save his people from their sins" (v. 21). The name Jesus (Hebrew: Yeshua) means "Yahweh saves." Finally, verse 23 quotes Isaiah 7:14, identifying Jesus as "Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us"—the central claim of the gospel is that in Jesus, God Himself has come to dwell with humanity.
Matthew 1 calls us to recognize Jesus as both King and Savior, the fulfillment of all Scripture's promises. Just as Joseph submitted in faith to God's will, we too are invited to surrender our lives to Jesus and experience His saving grace. The genealogy reminds us that God works through history, through weakness, and through unexpected people—including us—to accomplish His purposes.
