The Prophecy of the Seed of the Woman (The Protoevangelium)

This article explains the first messianic prophecy recorded in Scripture, given by God immediately after the fall of man. The Lord said to the serpent, "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel." This prophecy foretells the coming of a Redeemer, born of a woman, who would defeat Satan and undo the curse of sin. It is the foundation of all subsequent messianic prophecy and the first promise of the gospel.

1. The Setting of the Prophecy

Adam and Eve had just sinned by eating the forbidden fruit. They hid themselves from the presence of the Lord. God confronted Adam, who blamed the woman, and the woman, who blamed the serpent. Then God pronounced judgment. He first cursed the serpent. The serpent had been the instrument of temptation, but behind the serpent was Satan himself. Jesus later declared that the devil was a murderer from the beginning and the father of lies. The curse upon the serpent was therefore a curse upon Satan, and embedded within that curse was the first promise of salvation.

2. The Enmity Between the Serpent and the Woman

God declared, "I will put enmity between you and the woman." This enmity is not natural; it is divinely appointed. God Himself would create and sustain hostility between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman. Before this pronouncement, Eve had no inherent hatred for the serpent. But now, God would place a supernatural antagonism between the forces of evil and the human race. This enmity explains why Satan hates humanity and why humanity, in its redeemed state, rejects Satan. The enmity is the foundation of spiritual warfare.

3. The Seed of the Serpent and the Seed of the Woman

"Between your seed and her Seed." The seed of the serpent refers to all who follow Satan, both demonic beings and human beings who do his will. Jesus told the Pharisees, "You are of your father the devil." The seed of the serpent are those who reject God and embrace rebellion. The seed of the woman refers first to humanity in general, but specifically to one descendant—the singular "Seed." The Hebrew word is singular, not plural. Paul later identifies this Seed as Christ: "Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, 'And to seeds,' as of many, but as of one, 'And to your Seed,' who is Christ."

4. The Bruising of the Head and the Bruising of the Heel

"He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel." The serpent's head is the seat of his power and life. A blow to the head is fatal. The seed of the woman would deliver a mortal wound to the serpent. This speaks of the decisive defeat of Satan by Christ. On the cross, Christ crushed the power of the devil. The writer of Hebrews declares that through death Christ defeated the one who had the power of death, that is, the devil. The bruising of the heel speaks of a non-fatal wound. The serpent would strike the Seed's heel. This refers to the suffering of Christ—the crucifixion, the pain, the death. But the wound to the heel was temporary. He rose from the dead. The serpent's head was crushed forever.

5. The Identity of the Promised Seed

The promised Seed is Jesus Christ, the Son of God born of the virgin Mary. Paul writes, "When the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law." The prophecy specifically says "her Seed" — the seed of the woman, not the seed of the man. This is a veiled reference to the virgin birth. Normally, offspring are spoken of as the seed of the father. But here, God emphasized the woman's seed, pointing to a unique birth where the father would not be a human man. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

6. The Fulfillment at the Cross and Resurrection

The prophecy was fulfilled at Calvary. On the cross, Christ's heel was bruised. He suffered physically, spiritually, and emotionally. He bore the full weight of the curse. He cried, "It is finished!" At the moment of His death, the serpent struck. But three days later, Christ rose from the dead. The resurrection was the crushing blow to the serpent's head. Death was defeated. Sin was atoned for. Satan's power was broken. Paul declares, "Having disarmed the principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it." The head of the serpent was crushed.

7. The Continuation of the Enmity in the Church

The enmity between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman continues throughout church history. Satan wars against the saints. He seeks to devour the children of God. Believers are called to resist him, steadfast in the faith. The serpent's seed persecutes the woman's seed. But the outcome is certain. The apostle John writes, "He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil." The enmity will continue until the final judgment.

8. The Final Defeat of Satan

The prophecy of Genesis 3:15 finds its ultimate fulfillment in the book of Revelation. The great dragon, that serpent of old, called the devil and Satan, is cast into the lake of fire and brimstone. There he is tormented day and night forever and ever. The head of the serpent is not merely bruised but crushed completely. The Seed of the woman, Jesus Christ, returns as King of kings and Lord of lords. He completes the victory that was won at the cross. The ancient promise is finally and fully realized.

9. The Protoevangelium as the First Gospel

Genesis 3:15 is rightly called the protoevangelium — the first gospel. It is the first announcement of good news after the bad news of the fall. There is hope. The woman's Seed will come. He will crush the serpent's head. This promise sustained the patriarchs, the prophets, and the saints throughout the Old Testament. Every subsequent messianic prophecy is an unfolding of this original promise. The prophets would speak of the virgin birth, the place of birth, the sufferings, and the glories that would follow. But it all begins here.

10. The Assurance of Victory for Believers

The promise of Genesis 3:15 is not only about Christ but also about all who are united to Christ. Paul writes, "The God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly." Believers share in Christ's victory. Through faith, they overcome the evil one. The enmity is real, the battle is fierce, but the outcome is certain. The head of the serpent has been crushed. Believers are more than conquerors through Him who loved them. The ancient promise gives assurance that evil will not triumph. The Seed of the woman has won the victory, and those who are His will share in it.

Conclusion
The prophecy of the Seed of the woman is the first and foundational messianic promise. In the very moment of judgment, God proclaimed the gospel. He promised a Redeemer who would crush the serpent's head, though His own heel would be bruised. That promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, crucified for sins, risen for victory. He has defeated Satan, and He will come again to complete that victory. Let every believer take heart: the serpent's head is crushed. The Seed of the woman reigns.
