Chapter Commentary — Acts 3
Chapter Overview

Chapter Overview

Acts 3 presents the first recorded miracle of the apostles after Pentecost, demonstrating the power of the risen Jesus working through His disciples. When Peter and John encounter a man crippled from birth at the temple gate, they offer him something far greater than the coins he requests: healing in the name of Jesus Christ. This divine act becomes the platform for Peter's powerful proclamation of the gospel, calling his Jewish audience to repentance and faith in Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.

Verses 1–5: The Encounter at the Beautiful Gate

Peter and John approach the temple during the ninth hour (3 p.m.), the time of afternoon prayer. There they encounter a man who has been lame since birth, carried daily to the Beautiful Gate to beg from worshippers (verses 1–2). The man's condition represents helplessness and complete dependence—he cannot help himself and must rely entirely on others' charity. When he asks Peter and John for alms, Peter demands his full attention: "Look on us" (verse 4). This simple command signals that something extraordinary is about to happen; the man's expectation is about to be exceeded far beyond what he imagined.

Verses 6–8: Healing in Jesus' Name

Peter's response is remarkable: "Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk" (verse 6). The apostle possesses no earthly wealth, but he offers something infinitely more valuable—healing and restoration. Note that Peter does not heal by his own power; rather, he invokes the name of Jesus Christ. This is the foundation of apostolic authority: the believers act in Jesus' name and by His power, not their own. Immediately, the man's feet and ankle bones receive strength (verse 7). The healing is instantaneous and complete; he leaps up, walks, and enters the temple with them, "walking, and leaping, and praising God" (verse 8). His physical restoration is inseparable from his spiritual response—he praises God.

Verses 9–11: The Crowds Gather in Wonder

The miracle is undeniable and public. Everyone recognizes this man who had sat begging at the gate is now whole (verse 10). Their amazement becomes a gathering force; the healed man clings to Peter and John as the people run together in Solomon's porch (verse 11). The miracle creates the audience for the gospel message that follows.

Verses 12–26: Peter's Gospel Proclamation

Peter seizes this moment to preach. He first redirects attention from the apostles themselves to God's power (verse 12), then proclaims Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament hope. He accuses his listeners of delivering up and denying Jesus before Pilate (verses 13–14), yet he does not leave them in condemnation. Instead, he explains that they acted in ignorance, and that Christ's suffering itself fulfilled prophecy (verses 17–18). The heart of Peter's message is a call to repentance: "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord" (verse 19). Repentance brings both forgiveness and blessing. Peter anchors his appeal in Scripture, referencing the covenant with Abraham (verses 22–26), showing that God's promise to bless all nations through Abraham's seed finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ alone.

Application for Today

This chapter teaches us that the gospel's power is demonstrated not only in words but in transformed lives. When we encounter spiritual brokenness around us, we must point people not to our own abilities but to Jesus' name and authority. Like Peter and John, our privilege is to present Christ as Savior and Lord, inviting others into the refreshing presence of God through repentance and faith.
