Acts 8

Acts 8 marks a pivotal turning point in the early Church's expansion. Following Stephen's martyrdom, persecution scatters believers throughout Judea and Samaria, yet rather than silencing the gospel, this suffering becomes a catalyst for its spread. Through the ministries of Philip and the apostolic oversight of Peter and John, we witness the gospel breaking down barriers—both spiritual (demon possession and sorcery) and cultural (the historic divide between Jews and Samaritans). The chapter concludes with Philip's divinely orchestrated encounter with an Ethiopian eunuch, demonstrating that God's redemptive plan extends to the ends of the earth.

Saul's approval of Stephen's execution (verse 1) introduces the man who will become Christianity's greatest apostle—a sobering reminder that the Lord can transform even the most zealous persecutors. The "great persecution" scatters the Jerusalem church, yet notice the sovereignty of God at work: what Satan intended for harm becomes the mechanism of gospel expansion. The apostles remain in Jerusalem to provide leadership continuity, while ordinary believers become missionaries. Verse 4 captures the counterintuitive result—scattered persecution produces preaching everywhere. Philip, one of the seven deacons appointed in chapter 6, now becomes an evangelist in Samaria, a region historically despised by Jews (John 4:9). This too reflects God's purposes: the gospel flows to the very people Jewish believers would have naturally avoided.

Philip's preaching is authenticated by miracles—unclean spirits depart with loud cries, the paralyzed walk, and the lame are healed (verses 6–7). These signs are not mere entertainment; they validate the message and demonstrate that Christ's kingdom authority extends over darkness and disease. The great joy in verse 8 flows from liberation—spiritual and physical. Even Simon the sorcerer, whose false power had enslaved the people through deception, finds himself eclipsed by true power. When the Samaritans believe and are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (verse 12), a community historically alienated from Jewish religious life enters the Church. This represents genuine racial and cultural reconciliation through Christ.

Simon's belief and baptism (verse 13) seem genuine at first—he follows Philip and marvels at miracles. However, his heart reveals itself when the apostles arrive. Observing that the Holy Spirit is given through the apostles' hands (verse 17), Simon offers money for this power (verse 18). Peter's rebuke is unsparing: Simon's heart is not right (verse 21), and his sin is the "gall of bitterness" (verse 23)—a phrase echoing Deuteronomy, indicating spiritual corruption. Simon wanted the gift of God but not the Giver. His desire for power over others—mirroring his sorcerous past—exposes that conversion requires genuine repentance, not merely intellectual assent or attraction to spiritual phenomena. Peter does offer hope: repent and pray (verse 22), showing that even this sin is not unforgivable if true transformation occurs.

Philip's next assignment comes by angelic direction (verse 26), sending him toward Gaza where he meets an Ethiopian official. This eunuch—likely a God-fearer who had journeyed to Jerusalem to worship—is reading Isaiah 53, the passage about the Suffering Servant. Philip's simple question (verse 30) opens the door, and his explanation connects the Old Testament text directly to Jesus (verse 35). The eunuch's immediate desire for baptism (verse 36) and his confession that "Jesus Christ is the Son of God" (verse 37) show genuine faith. His baptism represents the gospel reaching beyond Jewish boundaries to Africa and the Gentile world. The Spirit's dramatic removal of Philip (verse 39) emphasizes divine purposefulness, and the eunuch departs "rejoicing"—the fruit of authentic conversion.
