Study Notes — Acts 7
9 sectionsActs 7 records Stephen's magnificent speech before the Sanhedrin—a sweeping review of Israel's sacred history from Abraham through Solomon. Rather than a defensive apology, Stephen's address becomes a prophetic indictment, showing how God's people have repeatedly resisted His Spirit and rejected His messengers. The chapter culminates in Stephen's vision of the ascended Christ and his martyrdom, making him the first Christian martyr and setting the stage for the persecution that scatters the early church.
The high priest asks Stephen directly about the accusations against him (v. 1). Rather than deny the charges, Stephen launches into Israel's history, beginning with Abraham. He emphasizes that "the God of glory" appeared to Abraham in Mesopotamia (v. 2)—before any temple existed, before the law was given. God called Abraham to leave his country and kindred (v. 3), and Abraham obeyed, though God gave him no inheritance in the land itself, only a promise (vv. 4–5). Stephen deliberately highlights that God's covenant preceded any physical possession or building. The covenant of circumcision sealed with Abraham (v. 8) linked him to Isaac, Jacob, and the twelve patriarchs—all recipients of God's grace before any temple or formal religious institution existed.
Stephen recounts how the patriarchs, "moved with envy," sold Joseph into Egypt (v. 9)—yet God was with Joseph, delivering him from affliction and exalting him to govern Egypt (vv. 9–10). During famine, Jacob and his family came to Egypt (vv. 11–14), and were later buried in Shechem (v. 16). The point is clear: God's purposes were accomplished not through institutional religion but through His sovereign providence working through individuals and families, often in foreign lands.
As the population grew in Egypt (v. 17), a new king who "knew not Joseph" oppressed the Hebrews (v. 18). Moses was born during this persecution (v. 20), rescued by Pharaoh's daughter, and educated in Egyptian wisdom (v. 22). At forty years old, Moses attempted to deliver his people by his own strength, killing an Egyptian (vv. 23–24). His brethren rejected him, asking "Who made thee a ruler and judge?" (v. 27), and Moses fled to Midian for forty years (v. 29). Stephen is emphasizing that the people refused the deliverer God had prepared.
In the wilderness, God appeared to Moses in a burning bush (v. 30) and called him to deliver Israel (vv. 31–34). Remarkably, the very Moses whom the people had rejected became God's chosen instrument for deliverance and signs (vv. 35–36). This foreshadows the greater rejection and ultimate exaltation of Jesus Christ.
Moses predicted a coming Prophet like himself (v. 37), whom the people should hear. Yet Stephen reveals the tragic pattern: the fathers "would not obey" Moses and turned their hearts back to Egypt (v. 39). They made a golden calf and "rejoiced in the works of their own hands" (vv. 40–41)—worshipping idols despite God's deliverance. Because of this rebellion, God "turned and gave them up to worship the host of heaven" (v. 42), quoting Amos to show divine judgment upon persistent unfaithfulness.
Stephen cites ancient idolatry (v. 43), then moves to the tabernacle and temple. Though the tabernacle was God-appointed (v. 44) and David sought to build a house for God (v. 46), Solomon's temple was only human construction (v. 47). Crucially, Stephen quotes Isaiah: God does not dwell in temples made with hands (vv. 48–50). His point strikes at the heart of Jewish religious pride—God's presence cannot be contained by buildings or institutions.
Stephen accuses the council of being "stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart"—resisting the Holy Spirit just as their fathers persecuted the prophets and killed those who foretold Christ (vv. 51–53). Then, filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen sees heaven opened and Jesus standing at God's right hand (vv. 55–56). This vision of the ascended, exalted Christ validates everything Stephen has proclaimed.
The council's rage erupts; they drag Stephen outside the city and stone him (vv. 57–58). A young man named Saul guards their cloaks. Stephen, like Jesus, commits his spirit to the Lord (v. 59) and forgives his murderers
