Chapter Commentary — Acts 18
Chapter Overview

Chapter Overview

Acts 18 chronicles Paul's vital ministry in Corinth, one of the most important cities in the ancient world. After a difficult reception in Athens, Paul arrives in Corinth where he meets Aquila and Priscilla, fellow tent-makers who become lifelong ministry partners. Though initially facing rejection from the Jewish community, Paul experiences remarkable success as the Lord encourages him in a vision and grants him a fruitful year-and-a-half of ministry. The chapter also introduces Apollos, a gifted preacher who exemplifies the importance of complete biblical instruction in the faith.

Verses 1–5: Paul's Arrival and Initial Ministry

Paul comes to Corinth after leaving Athens, where his philosophical approach had yielded limited results. He immediately connects with Aquila and Priscilla, Jewish believers recently expelled from Rome under Claudius's decree. Their shared trade as tent-makers becomes Paul's means of financial self-support—a pattern he maintains throughout his ministry (see 1 Thessalonians 2:9). This demonstrates Paul's practical wisdom: he refuses to burden young churches while maintaining his credibility and independence. Each Sabbath, Paul reasons in the synagogue, attempting to persuade both Jews and God-fearing Greeks. When Silas and Timothy arrive from Macedonia (likely bringing financial support), Paul becomes intensely focused—literally "pressed in the spirit"—to testify that Jesus is the Messiah. His urgency reflects the Holy Spirit's prompting and his deep conviction about the gospel's centrality.

Verses 6–12: Opposition and Divine Encouragement

When Jewish leaders oppose and blaspheme Paul's message, he performs a significant symbolic act: shaking his garments (v. 6). This gesture, rooted in Jewish custom, signifies both a break of fellowship and a declaration that their rejection rests on their own heads, not his. Paul then turns to the Gentiles—a pivotal moment in Corinth's mission. He relocates to the home of Justus, positioned strategically near the synagogue. Remarkably, Crispus, the synagogue ruler himself, converts with his entire household—a sign of genuine revival. Many Corinthians believe and are baptized. Yet Paul likely feels vulnerable in this hostile environment, so the Lord appears to him in a night vision (v. 9) with words of comfort: "Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace." This assurance—that Christ is with him and will protect him—emboldens Paul to remain and plant a strong church.

Verses 13–17: The Trial Before Gallio

The Jewish community brings Paul before Gallio, the Roman proconsul, accusing him of persuading people to worship God contrary to Jewish law. Gallio's response is a masterpiece of judicial wisdom: he recognizes this is not a matter of criminal conduct but rather theological dispute—a question of "words and names" outside Roman jurisdiction (v. 15). He dismisses the case entirely. This outcome protects Paul legally and establishes an important precedent: Christianity is not a threat to Roman order. Ironically, the hostile mob then beats Sosthenes, the new synagogue ruler, but Gallio refuses to intervene. God's protection over Paul is thus vindicated.

Verses 18–28: Paul's Journey and Apollos

After eighteen months, Paul departs for Syria with Aquila and Priscilla, having taken a Nazirite vow (shorn head in Cenchrea). He briefly ministers in Ephesus before sailing home to Jerusalem and Antioch. Upon returning to Ephesus, Paul strengthens the disciples throughout Galatia and Phrygia. The chapter concludes by introducing Apollos, an eloquent Alexandrian Jew instructed in John's baptism but incomplete in his understanding of Christ. When Aquila and Priscilla recognize his partial knowledge, they privately mentor him in "the way of God more perfectly" (v. 26)—a beautiful example of humble correction and discipleship. Apollos subsequently becomes a powerful evangelist in Achaia, mightily convincing the Jews through Scripture that Jesus is the Messiah.

Application for Today

This chapter teaches us that faithful ministry combines practical faithfulness (self-supporting work), bold witness, humble encouragement from the Lord, and gracious mentoring of other believers. Like Paul, we are called to persevere when opposed, trust God's promises, and invest in others' spiritual growth—even when it requires patient, loving correction.
