Study Notes — Acts 14
6 sectionsActs 14 records Paul and Barnabas's missionary journey through the cities of Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe during their first missionary trip. The chapter presents a powerful pattern that repeats throughout the apostolic ministry: bold gospel proclamation, signs and wonders confirming God's word, fierce opposition from both religious and pagan authorities, and faithful endurance through persecution. Whether facing Jewish resistance or pagan idolatry, Paul and Barnabas remained committed to turning people from false religion to faith in the living God, and they established local churches despite mounting danger.
In Iconium, Paul and Barnabas preach with such power and clarity that a great multitude both of Jews and Greeks believed (v. 1). This demonstrates that the gospel transcends ethnic and religious boundaries when presented with clarity and conviction. However, opposition quickly arises. Unbelieving Jews stir up Gentiles against the apostles (v. 2), showing how Satan often recruits unlikely allies to resist God's kingdom. Despite this hostility, Paul and Barnabas abode long time speaking boldly in the Lord (v. 3). The Greek word for boldly—parresia—means to speak with full freedom and courage, rooted not in human confidence but in the Lord's empowering presence. God authenticates their message with signs and wonders (v. 3), confirming the word of His grace. The city becomes divided (v. 4), and when assault and stoning threaten (v. 5), they prudently flee.
Application: Opposition to the gospel is predictable, but so is God's faithfulness. We need not fear when we speak truth boldly in His name.
Fleeing to Lystra and Derbe, Paul and Barnabas continue preaching (v. 7). At Lystra, Paul encounters a man impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked (v. 8). After perceiving the man's faith to be healed (v. 9), Paul commands him to stand—and he does, leaping and walking (v. 10). The miracle is immediate and undeniable. Tragically, the pagan onlookers misinterpret it, concluding that the gods are come down to us in the likeness of men (v. 11). They call Barnabas Jupiter and Paul Mercurius (v. 12), ready to offer sacrifice. This reveals the blindness of a culture without Scripture: miracles alone do not convey the gospel's central truth. Signs must be accompanied by explanation.
Application: Miracles are valuable, but they are never substitutes for clear, verbal proclamation of who Jesus is and why He came.
When the priest of Jupiter prepares to sacrifice to them (v. 13), Paul and Barnabas rent their clothes (v. 14)—a sign of distress—and rush into the crowd to stop the idolatry. Their message is direct: we also are men of like passions with you (v. 15). They redirect the people from vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein (v. 15). Paul appeals to natural revelation (vv. 16–17), noting that God has revealed Himself through creation, provision of rain, and fruitful seasons. This approach shows Paul's skill in contextualizing the gospel for pagan audiences who lack Old Testament knowledge. Verse 18 notes they scarce restrained the people from sacrificing—a close call.
Application: We must be vigilant to protect God's glory and correct false beliefs about Him, even at personal risk.
Jews from Antioch and Iconium stir up the crowd, stone Paul, and drag him outside the city, supposing he had been dead (v. 19). Yet when disciples gather around him, he rose up, and came into the city (v. 20)—a remarkable recovery that demonstrates God's protection and purpose. The next day he and Barnabas travel to Derbe (v. 20), then retrace their steps to encourage new believers, teaching that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God (v. 22). They ordained elders in every church (v. 23), establishing leadership and commending these young congregations to the Lord, on whom they believed (v. 23).
Application: New believers need both warning about trials ahead and assurance of God's sustaining grace.
