Study Notes — Acts 20
5 sectionsActs 20 documents Paul's final journey toward Jerusalem, marked by his determination to reach the city by Pentecost despite mounting dangers. The chapter opens with Paul's travels through Macedonia and Greece, then pivots to one of Scripture's most memorable miracles—the raising of Eutychus—and culminates with Paul's deeply moving farewell address to the Ephesian elders at Miletus. Throughout these events, we witness Paul's unwavering commitment to his calling, his pastoral heart for the churches, and his willingness to suffer for Christ's sake.
After the riot in Ephesus (described in chapter 19), Paul departs for Macedonia, visiting and encouraging the disciples with much exhortation. He travels through Greece and stays three months, during which Jewish opponents plot to ambush him as he prepares to sail to Syria. Wisely, Paul changes his route and returns through Macedonia instead. Luke then lists seven companions traveling with Paul—representatives from various churches including Sopater, Aristarchus, Secundus, Gaius, Timothy, Tychicus, and Trophimus. These men were likely chosen to accompany the collection Paul had gathered for the Jerusalem church, demonstrating accountability and the unity of the early churches.
Application: Paul's caution against his enemies' plots reminds us that spiritual wisdom includes prudent awareness of real dangers. His companions represent the fellowship and shared mission that characterized the early church.
After Passover in Philippi, Paul and his party sail to Troas in five days. On the first day of the week—the Lord's Day—the believers gather to break bread (communion) and hear Paul preach. Because he plans to depart the next morning, Paul speaks until midnight. In a window of the upper chamber sits a young man named Eutychus who, overcome by sleep during the lengthy sermon, falls from the third story and is taken up dead. Paul embraces him and declares, "his life is in him" (v. 10). The boy is restored to life. Paul then returns upstairs, breaks bread, eats, and continues talking with the disciples until dawn before departing.
This miracle demonstrates Christ's power over death working through His apostle, similar to Peter's raising of Dorcas (9:40). Eutychus's name means "fortunate"—a fitting name for one rescued from death. The incident also reveals the early church's joy in gathering on Sunday to worship and hear God's Word, no matter how long the message lasted.
Application: This passage encourages us to value the preaching of God's Word and to trust in Christ's power over death, while also reminding us of the importance of pastoral care even in unexpected crises.
Paul decides to walk overland to Assos while his companions sail ahead, intending to meet them there. From Assos, they sail to Mitylene (on Lesbos), then continue along the coast—passing near Chios and Samos—to Miletus. Luke notes that Paul deliberately sails past Ephesus to avoid delays, eager to reach Jerusalem for Pentecost if possible. This shows Paul's priority: completing his current mission while acknowledging the Holy Spirit's leading.
Application: Paul's intentional time alone walking to Assos likely afforded him prayer and reflection. We too benefit from solitude with God amid busy ministry.
From Miletus, Paul summons the elders of the Ephesian church. In this tender and profound address, Paul reminds them of his faithful, humble ministry among them—serving with tears and facing Jewish opposition (vv. 18-19). He held nothing back from them, teaching publicly and from house to house, testifying to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ (v. 21).
Paul acknowledges that the Holy Spirit has bound him to go to Jerusalem, where bonds and afflictions await him (vv. 22-23). Yet he counts his life not dear to himself, desiring only to complete his course with joy and finish the ministry Christ gave him (v. 24). He knows this is likely his final farewell, declaring himself innocent of anyone's blood because he has fully proclaimed God's counsel (vv. 26-27).
Paul then charges the elders to guard themselves and the flock, which Christ purchased with His own blood (v. 28). He warns that grievous wolves will enter after his departure, and some from among their own ranks will distort the faith to draw followers (vv. 29-30). For three years he warned them persistently with tears (v. 31). Finally, he commends them to God and His Word of grace, which alone can build them up and secure their inheritance (v. 32).
Paul concludes by testifying that he never coveted anyone's wealth, instead working with his own hands and supporting the weak—exemplifying Jesus's own teaching that "it is more blessed to give than to receive" (v. 35).
Application: This farewell models faithful
