Study Notes — Acts 26
6 sectionsIn Acts 26, Paul stands before King Agrippa and delivers one of Scripture's most powerful personal testimonies of conversion and calling. Rather than merely defending himself against false accusations, Paul seizes the opportunity to proclaim the gospel and appeal to the king's knowledge of Jewish law and prophecy. This chapter showcases how a life transformed by encounter with the risen Christ becomes an unstoppable witness, and how even in the midst of legal peril, the believer's primary concern remains the salvation of those who hear.
Paul begins with courtesy and humility, acknowledging both his privilege and Agrippa's expertise in Jewish matters (vv. 1–3). He then establishes his credibility by recounting his impeccable past as a strict Pharisee, known throughout Jerusalem for his devotion to the law (vv. 4–5). The key point: Paul's accusation, he explains, stems not from lawbreaking but from his hope in the resurrection promise made to Israel's fathers (vv. 6–7). By framing his faith in terms of Israel's own eschatological hopes, Paul disarms the charge that he has abandoned Judaism. He has simply recognized the fulfillment of what every faithful Jew anticipates.
Application: Paul's strategy teaches us to build bridges of understanding with our audience. When sharing faith, we do well to begin with common ground and respect, showing that the gospel completes rather than contradicts genuine longing for God.
Paul boldly admits his past violent opposition to Christians. He imprisoned saints, cast votes for their execution, and compelled them to blaspheme (vv. 9–11). This radical honesty is disarming; Paul does not minimize his sin but owns it fully. His question in verse 8—"Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?"—is pivotal. He challenges the very rationalism that drives his accusers to reject the resurrection.
Application: Honest testimony about our former blindness and sin strengthens our witness. We need not hide our past; rather, its contrast with God's mercy makes the gospel shine.
Paul recounts the dramatic midday vision of blinding light (v. 13), his fall to the ground, and the voice of the risen Jesus (vv. 14–15). Christ's commission is threefold: Paul is to be a minister and witness, to open eyes and turn people from darkness to light, and to mediate forgiveness of sins and sanctification through faith in Jesus (vv. 16–18). The language of turning from the power of Satan unto God emphasizes the cosmic scope of conversion—it is liberation from spiritual bondage.
Application: Every Christian's calling echoes Paul's: to witness to transformation, to proclaim release from spiritual darkness, and to point others to the inheritance God gives through faith.
Paul emphasizes his obedience to the heavenly vision (v. 19), proclaiming repentance everywhere from Damascus to Jerusalem to the Gentiles (v. 20). Crucially, he asserts that his message aligns perfectly with Moses and the prophets (v. 22). Christ's suffering, resurrection as the first that should rise from the dead, and his light to both Jews and Gentiles (v. 23) are not novel inventions but fulfillment of Scripture.
Application: Consistency between our message and Scripture's witness gives us authority and credibility.
Festus interrupts, dismissing Paul's words as madness (v. 24), but Paul calmly asserts truth and soundness (v. 25). Paul then appeals directly to Agrippa's knowledge of the prophets (vv. 26–27). Agrippa's reply—"Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian" (v. 28)—reveals the knife-edge of decision. Paul's gracious response reveals his heart: he wishes all present were fully Christian (v. 29). The officials conclude Paul has done nothing worthy of death, though his appeal to Caesar cannot be revoked (vv. 30–32).
Application: Some hear the gospel and come close to faith but turn back. Like Paul, we must respond with grace, trusting God's sovereignty while desiring the full conversion of every hearer.
Acts 26 models winsome, bold, and Christ-centered testimony. Whether before hostile judges or sympathetic rulers, Paul's single aim is to exalt Jesus and call people to transformation. In our pluralistic age, we too must combine respect, honesty about our past, clarity about Christ's lordship, and unwavering appeal to Scripture. Our changed lives and steadfast hope in resurrection are our greatest testimonies.
