Study Notes — Acts 5
6 sectionsActs 5 presents two contrasting stories that reveal God's character and the nature of the early church. First, we see the sobering account of Ananias and Sapphira, whose deception about their charitable gift results in divine judgment—a stark reminder that the Holy Spirit demands honesty and that God takes sin seriously. Then, the chapter shifts to show the apostles performing remarkable miracles and facing persecution with joy, demonstrating that despite opposition from religious authorities, the gospel message continues to spread with power and the believers remain committed to Christ regardless of the cost.
Ananias and his wife Sapphira sold a possession, but secretly kept back part of the proceeds while pretending to give it all to the apostles. This was not primarily a sin about money—Peter makes clear in verse 4 that they had complete freedom to keep their property or give as much or as little as they wished. The sin was lying to the Holy Spirit (verse 3). They wanted the reputation of generosity without the actual sacrifice, attempting to deceive the apostles and, more seriously, attempting to deceive God Himself. Peter's rebuke is direct: their lie was ultimately against God, not men. The immediate consequence was death—Ananias fell down and "gave up the ghost." This was not Peter cursing him; rather, the Holy Spirit Himself executed judgment. This demonstrates that the early church operated under an extraordinary measure of God's direct oversight.
Young men buried Ananias immediately. Three hours later, Sapphira arrived, unaware of what had happened. Peter gave her an opportunity to confess by asking if they sold the land for the price she named (verse 8). She confirmed the lie. Peter asked how they could "agree together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord" (verse 9)—revealing that this was a conspiracy, a deliberate plan between husband and wife. She received the same judgment as her husband. The account emphasizes that "great fear came upon all the church" (verse 11). This fear was not terror of Peter's authority but reverence for God's holiness. The early believers understood that belonging to God's covenant community meant living with integrity before a holy God.
Despite—or perhaps because of—this judgment, the apostles continued performing miracles. Verse 15 describes sick people being brought to the streets so that Peter's shadow might fall on them. While we should not build a theology on shadow-healing, the passage emphasizes the power of apostolic ministry and the people's desperate faith. Multitudes were healed, and believers continued to multiply (verse 14).
The Sadducees (verse 17), who denied resurrection, arrested the apostles. An angel freed them and commanded them to teach in the temple. When brought before the council again, the apostles declared: "We ought to obey God rather than men" (verse 29). This is the foundational principle of Christian civil disobedience. They testified boldly to Jesus' resurrection and exaltation (verses 30-31) and claimed the Holy Spirit as their witness (verse 32).
The council wanted to execute the apostles, but Gamaliel, a respected Pharisee, urged restraint. His argument was pragmatic: if this work is of men, it will fail; if it is of God, you cannot stop it (verses 38-39). The council beat the apostles and released them with orders not to teach in Jesus' name. Remarkably, the apostles "departed...rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name" (verse 41). This reveals the joy that comes from faithful suffering for Christ. They immediately returned to teaching (verse 42).
Acts 5 calls us to radical honesty before God, unwavering boldness in witnessing, and joy in suffering for Christ. We need not fear human opposition when we prioritize obedience to God. The Spirit-filled life is marked by integrity, courage, and gladness in tribulation—not because hardship feels good, but because Christ is worth any cost.
