1. Satan Is a Real Personal Being, Not a Symbol
Satan is not an abstract force of evil nor a personification of human wickedness. He is a real, intelligent, personal being. The Scriptures speak of him with personal pronouns and attributes of personhood: he speaks, he tempts, he schemes, he accuses, he transforms himself, and he has will and intellect. To deny the personality of Satan is to deny the clear testimony of Scripture. Jesus Himself spoke to Satan, rebuked him, and referred to him as a real adversary.
2. Satan Was Created by God as a Good Angel
Satan was not created evil. God made all things good, including the angels. Satan was originally among the holy angels, but he did not keep his proper position. He sinned through pride and rebellion. The prophet Ezekiel describes him as a created being, perfect in his ways from the day he was created until iniquity was found in him. His original state was one of beauty, wisdom, and holiness, but he corrupted himself.
3. Satan Fell Through Pride and Ambition
The sin of Satan was pride. He said in his heart: "I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, I will sit upon the mount of the congregation, I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High." Five times he declared "I will." He sought to usurp the place of God. For this sin, God cast him down to the earth. Pride is the devil's original sin and his primary weapon against mankind.
4. Satan Is Called by Many Descriptive Names
Satan means "adversary." Devil means "slanderer" or "false accuser." He is called the serpent (deceiver), the dragon (destructive power), the evil one (moral corruption), the tempter (one who entices to sin), the accuser of the brethren (one who brings charges before God), Beelzebub (prince of demons), the ruler of this world (usurper of authority), the god of this age (blinder of minds), the prince of the power of the air (ruler of demonic forces), and a roaring lion (seeking to devour). Each name reveals a different aspect of his evil work.
5. Satan Has a Kingdom and Demonic Hosts
Satan is not alone. He has his angels, also called demons or unclean spirits. These are the angels who fell with him. They are organized under his leadership as a kingdom of darkness. Jesus acknowledged that Satan has a kingdom. Paul speaks of spiritual wickedness in high places, of rulers, of authorities, of cosmic powers of this present darkness. Demons are personal, intelligent, evil spirits who serve Satan's purposes. Their final destination is the lake of fire.
6. Satan Is the Tempter and Deceiver of the Whole World
Satan tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden, leading to the fall of the human race. He is called the tempter. He deceives the whole world. He blinds the minds of those who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel should shine on them. He disguises himself as an angel of light, and his ministers disguise themselves as ministers of righteousness. His primary weapon is deception, leading people away from the truth of God.
7. Satan Is the Accuser of the Brethren
In the book of Revelation, Satan is called the accuser of the brethren, who accuses them before God day and night. He brings charges against believers, seeking to condemn them. Yet his accusations are answered by the blood of the Lamb. Believers overcome him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. He no longer has any legitimate charge against those who are in Christ Jesus.
8. Satan Has Limited Power Under God's Sovereignty
Satan is not equal to God. He is a creature, not the Creator. His power is limited. He could do nothing to Job without God's permission. He could not sift Peter like wheat without Jesus' permission. He cannot act beyond the bounds that God sets. The Lord has put enmity between the serpent and the woman, between his seed and her Seed. Christ is stronger than the strong man. Satan is a defeated foe, not a rival god.
9. Satan Was Defeated at the Cross
For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Through death, Christ defeated the one who had the power of death, that is, the devil. The cross was the decisive victory. Christ disarmed the principalities and powers, making a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them. The head of the serpent was crushed by the Seed of the woman. The judgment of Satan was secured at Calvary.
10. Satan's Final Judgment Is Eternal Fire
Satan will not escape judgment. He is already under sentence. The lake of fire was prepared for the devil and his angels. At the end of the age, Satan will be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where he will be tormented day and night forever and ever. There will be no escape, no second chance, no end. His rebellion will end in everlasting punishment. All who follow him will share his fate.
11. Believers Must Resist Satan
Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Do not give place to the devil. Be not ignorant of his devices. The believer's victory is in Christ, not in his own strength.
Conclusion
Satan is real, powerful, and wicked. But he is a defeated enemy. Greater is He who is in the believer than he who is in the world. Let no one be ignorant of his devices, but neither let anyone fear him. Christ has triumphed. The serpent's head is crushed. Resist the devil, and he will flee. Look to the Lamb who was slain, and the accuser is silenced forever.
