Study Notes — Acts 4
6 sectionsActs 4 presents a pivotal moment in the early church's witness: the apostles' arrest, interrogation, and courageous defense of the gospel before the Jewish council. Despite fierce opposition from religious authorities threatened by their proclamation of Jesus' resurrection, Peter and John boldly declare that salvation comes only through Christ's name. The chapter reveals not only the apostles' supernatural boldness empowered by the Holy Spirit, but also the church's deepened unity, generosity, and apostolic power in the face of persecution—demonstrating that opposition cannot silence the gospel or stop God's purposes.
The priests, temple captain, and Sadducees arrest Peter and John while they are speaking publicly about Jesus' resurrection. The Sadducees were particularly hostile to the resurrection message since they denied such doctrine entirely. Despite this opposition, verse 4 records a remarkable truth: approximately five thousand men believed the word. This doubling of believers (from 3,000 in chapter 2) shows that persecution does not hinder the gospel—it often accelerates it. The authorities' arrest only paused the apostles' public speech temporarily; the word continued spreading even in confinement.
The council convenes the next day—a formal body including Annas (former high priest), Caiaphas, and other priestly leaders. They demand to know by what power the apostles healed the lame beggar. Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost (verse 8), seizes the opportunity to testify. He names Jesus explicitly: "by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead" (verse 10). This is confrontational truth spoken with respect. Peter then quotes Psalm 118:22, applying the rejected stone becoming the cornerstone to Jesus' resurrection and exaltation. Verse 12 contains the gospel's exclusive claim: "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." There is no salvation synergism here—no supplementary path to God. Jesus alone is Savior.
The council members are astonished. Peter and John are identified as unlearned and ignorant men—they had no formal rabbinical training—yet they spoke with such authority and wisdom that "they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus" (verse 13). The healed man standing before them made refutation impossible (verse 14). The authorities cannot deny the miracle's reality, so they attempt damage control: they threaten the apostles and command them to cease speaking in Jesus' name (verses 17–18). The man's age (over forty, verse 22) emphasizes the healing's undeniable public nature.
Peter and John refuse compliance. Their response is sublime: "Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye" (verse 19). When human command contradicts God's command, believers must obey God. Released due to public pressure, the apostles report to their prayer meeting. The church responds not with fear but with fervent prayer (verses 24–30), quoting Psalm 2 and asking for boldness to speak God's word with healing signs. God's response is immediate and dramatic: the place shakes, and all are filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness (verse 31).
The chapter concludes by depicting the apostolic church's radical fellowship. Believers voluntarily sold possessions to meet communal needs (verses 34–35). Barnabas is introduced as an exemplar of this generous heart. This was not mandatory communism but Spirit-prompted love, demonstrating that gospel power produces transformed relationships and sacrificial community.
When pressured to compromise the gospel's exclusive claims or silence Christian witness, believers must remember Peter's example: speak truth respectfully, but never surrender Christ's uniqueness. Opposition may come, but the Spirit empowers boldness. The early church's unity and generosity challenge modern individualism—authentic faith produces transformed hearts that generously serve one another. Trust that God's purposes cannot be thwarted by human opposition.
