1 Corinthians 2
Study Notes — 1 Corinthians 1
6 sectionsFirst Corinthians chapter 1 establishes Paul's apostolic authority and immediately addresses serious divisions threatening the Corinthian church. Rather than beginning with rebukes, Paul opens with thanksgiving for God's grace at work in their lives, then gently but directly calls them to unity around Christ alone—not around human leaders or human wisdom. The chapter culminates with Paul's counter-cultural message: that God's "foolishness" (the cross of Christ) proves infinitely wiser and more powerful than all human reasoning, and that God deliberately chooses the weak and humble to display His glory, not the proud and self-sufficient.
Paul begins by identifying himself as called to be an apostle through the will of God (verse 1). This is not self-promotion; Paul is establishing his authority as a messenger sent by Christ Himself. He includes Sosthenes, likely a co-worker, as a humble gesture of fellowship. In verse 2, Paul addresses the church—not just its leaders, but all believers—reminding them they are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints. This was revolutionary: ordinary believers in Corinth were holy not by their own efforts but by their union with Christ. The greeting of grace and peace (verse 3) reflects both God's favor and the deep tranquility that comes only through reconciliation with Him. These words plant seeds of truth before Paul addresses their problems.
Before correcting the Corinthians, Paul thanks God for the grace given to them through Jesus Christ (verse 4). They were enriched in speech and knowledge (verse 5), spiritual gifts that should have united them but instead fueled pride. Verses 7-8 remind them they lack no spiritual gift and that Christ will keep them blameless unto the end. This is vital: Paul establishes their security in Christ before addressing their failings. Verse 9 anchors everything in God's character: God is faithful. He called them into fellowship with His Son, and that call is sure.
Now Paul turns to the crisis: the Corinthian church had fractured into competing loyalties. Some claimed allegiance to Paul, others to Apollos (an eloquent teacher), others to Peter (Cephas), and some to Christ—as if Christ were merely one faction among many (verses 10-12). Paul's response is piercing: Is Christ divided? (verse 13). He emphasizes that Christ was crucified for them, not Paul. He then reveals his relief that he baptized few Corinthians (verses 14-16), because his mission was to preach the gospel, not to baptize (verse 17). This wasn't dismissing baptism's importance, but preventing spiritual leaders from becoming rivals for loyalty.
Paul explains why human wisdom divides: the preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who perish, but power to us who are saved (verse 18). The world seeks impressive rhetoric and intellectual proof, but God chose a means that appears absurd: Christ crucified (verse 23). Yet to believers, this "weakness" and "foolishness" reveals Christ as the power and wisdom of God (verse 24). Verse 25 expresses a profound paradox: God's foolishness exceeds human wisdom; God's weakness surpasses human strength.
Paul notes that few Corinthians were wise, mighty, or noble by worldly standards (verse 26). God deliberately chose the weak and foolish to shame the strong and wise (verses 27-28), so that no one could boast in God's presence (verse 29). Our only boast is Christ: He is our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption (verse 30). The chapter ends with Scripture's call: let him that glorieth glory in the Lord (verse 31).
Modern churches still fragment over charismatic leaders, worship styles, and theological preferences. This chapter calls us back to Christ as the sole center of unity. Our education, talents, and influence are gifts, but they must never eclipse devotion to Christ alone. Like the Corinthians, we are secure in Christ's faithfulness. Our calling is to preach Christ crucified—not impressive sermons, but the transforming power of the cross—trusting that God uses weakness and humility to accomplish His purposes far more effectively than human cleverness ever could.
