Doctrine of the Second Coming of Christ

This article explains the biblical doctrine that the Lord Jesus Christ will personally, bodily, visibly, and gloriously return to the earth. His coming will be sudden, triumphant, and universal. He will raise the dead, judge the living and the dead, complete the salvation of His people, and establish His eternal kingdom.

1. Christ’s Return Is Personal and Bodily

When Jesus ascended into heaven, two angels declared to the disciples that this same Jesus, who was taken up from them, would come back in the same manner as they saw Him go into heaven. He ascended bodily and visibly; He will return bodily and visibly. His return is not symbolic, nor is it merely the coming of the Holy Spirit or a spiritual presence. It is the actual, personal return of the Lord Himself.

2. Christ’s Return Is Certain and Promised

Jesus Himself promised that He would come again. He said, “I will come again and receive you to Myself.” This promise was not conditional but absolute. The entire New Testament anticipates this event. Believers are to look for and hasten the coming of the day of God. The certainty of His return is the foundation of Christian hope and endurance.

3. Christ’s Return Will Be Sudden and Unexpected

The day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night. No one knows the day or the hour—not the angels, nor the Son, but only the Father. In the days before the flood, people were eating, drinking, marrying, and giving in marriage until the flood came and took them all away. So will be the coming of the Son of Man. Therefore, believers must watch and be ready at all times.

4. Christ’s Return Will Be Visible and Glorious

Every eye will see Him, including those who pierced Him. He will come in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. He will be accompanied by His angels and by the spirits of just men made perfect. His coming will be not secret but public, not in weakness but in majesty. He will come as King of kings and Lord of lords.

5. The Resurrection of the Dead Occurs at His Coming

The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God. The dead in Christ will rise first. This is the first resurrection. Those who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. The resurrection is inseparable from the second coming.

6. The Final Judgment Follows His Coming

When the Son of Man comes in His glory, all the holy angels with Him, He will sit on the throne of His glory. All nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides sheep from goats. The righteous will enter eternal life, and the unrighteous will go away into everlasting punishment. The judgment is universal and final.

7. The Kingdom Is Delivered to the Father

After Christ returns, He will deliver the kingdom to God the Father. He will have put an end to all rule, authority, and power. Death, the last enemy, will be destroyed. Then the Son Himself will be subject to the Father, so that God may be all in all. The new heavens and new earth will be established, wherein righteousness dwells.

8. Believers Are Commanded to Be Ready and Holy

Since the Lord will return at an hour you do not expect, believers are commanded to be ready. This readiness is not idle speculation but active holiness. Whoever has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. Believers are to live soberly, righteously, and godly, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.

Conclusion
The second coming of Christ is the blessed hope of the church. It is not a doctrine to be feared but to be longed for. That day will bring destruction to the ungodly but full redemption to all who have loved His appearing. Come, Lord Jesus.
