1 Samuel 2
Study Notes — 1 Samuel 1
6 sectionsFirst Samuel chapter 1 introduces us to Hannah, a woman of deep faith whose fervent prayer and patient trust in God's promise become a model of authentic devotion. Though barren and mocked by a rival wife, Hannah brings her sorrow directly to the Lord in prayer, making a vow that if God grants her a son, she will dedicate him to the Lord's service for life. This chapter demonstrates that God hears the prayers of the afflicted, honors faithful commitment, and uses humble, faithful vessels to accomplish His purposes—in this case, giving Israel the prophet Samuel, whose life will transform the nation.
Elkanah is introduced as a faithful worshipper from the hill country of Ephraim who keeps the annual pilgrimage to Shiloh to worship the Lord of hosts. Though he is a good man who loves Hannah deeply, he has taken two wives, a practice that, while culturally common in the Old Testament, always led to conflict. Peninnah has children; Hannah does not. The text is clear that the Lord had shut up her womb (v. 5)—this was not mere misfortune but a sovereign act of God. Yet Elkanah shows his love by giving Hannah a double portion at the sacrifice, honoring her above his other wife.
Year after year, Peninnah deliberately taunts Hannah about her barrenness, intensifying Hannah's grief. In her emotional pain, Hannah stops eating and weeping becomes her constant companion. Even Elkanah's loving reassurance—"am not I better to thee than ten sons?"—cannot soothe her longing for a child. His words, though tender, reveal that he does not fully grasp the depth of her spiritual yearning. A man's love, however genuine, cannot substitute for the fulfillment of a God-given desire or the peace that comes from prayer.
After the meal at Shiloh, Hannah rises and approaches the Lord in the temple. In bitterness of soul, she pours out her complaint to God—not in anger, but in honest, heartfelt petition. Her vow is remarkable: she does not merely ask for a son; she promises to give him back to the Lord all the days of his life, marking him as a Nazirite (no razor upon his head). This was not a bargain struck with reluctance, but a willingness born of faith—Hannah wanted a child not primarily for herself, but to serve God's purposes.
Eli observes Hannah's silent prayer—her lips moving without audible sound—and mistakenly assumes she is drunk. Rather than respond in shame or defensiveness, Hannah gently corrects him with dignity, explaining that she is pouring out her soul in sorrow and complaint before the Lord. Eli's initial judgment is rebuked by her humble response, and he then becomes the instrument of God's comfort, pronouncing a priestly blessing: "Go in peace; and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition." Immediately, Hannah's countenance changes; she eats and her sadness lifts—not because she has a son yet, but because she has entrusted her burden to God.
The Lord remembers Hannah. She conceives and bears a son named Samuel, meaning "asked of the Lord." When Samuel is weaned, Hannah makes good her vow without hesitation, bringing him to Eli to serve in the Lord's house permanently. Her statement in verse 28—"I have lent him to the LORD"—shows that she understands her son as God's gift, held with an open hand. This act of radical obedience sets the stage for Samuel's great prophetic ministry.
Hannah's example teaches us that authentic prayer is honest prayer—bringing our deepest longings and sorrows to God without pretense. More importantly, she shows us that true faith is not demanding God fulfill our wishes, but willingly surrendering our dearest desires to His purpose. When we pray with an open hand rather than a closed fist, God often honors us abundantly. Let us also remember that sometimes the greatest comfort comes not from answered prayer itself, but from the assurance that God has heard us and holds our future in His faithful hands.
