27 As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us, but you stay for a while, and I will reveal to you the word of God.” So the servant went on.

Study Notes — 1 Samuel 9
5 sections1 Samuel 9 marks a pivotal moment in Israel's history as God orchestrates the meeting between the prophet Samuel and a young Benjamite named Saul. What begins as a mundane search for lost donkeys becomes divine providence in action—a masterclass in how the Lord works behind the scenes to accomplish His purposes. This chapter reveals that God's timing is perfect, His foreknowledge is absolute, and His choice of leaders rests not on human merit alone but on His sovereign will to save His people from the Philistines.
We are introduced to Saul through the lens of his lineage and appearance. Kish is described as a mighty man of power (v. 1), and Saul himself is presented as a choice young man, and a goodly person—notably, taller than any other Israelite from his shoulders upward (v. 2). The text does not hide that Saul possessed impressive physical qualities. However, the chapter begins not with his strength but with his father's lost donkeys. When Kish sends Saul to search for them (v. 3), neither father nor son anticipates that this errand will change the nation's destiny. The fruitless search through several territories (vv. 4-5) shows that human effort alone cannot solve the deeper needs of God's people.
The servant's suggestion to seek the man of God (v. 6) reveals an important detail: there is a seer in the city whose words cometh surely to pass. Saul's concern about what gift to bring (v. 7) shows his respect for God's prophet, even though he lacked resources. The servant's offer of a quarter shekel of silver demonstrates faith and initiative. Verse 9 provides a helpful historical note: prophets were once called seers, emphasizing their role in perceiving divine truth. The young women's directions (vv. 11-13) confirm Samuel's presence and reveal that a public sacrifice and feast were underway—God's timing was impeccable. Every detail, from the sacrifice to the blessing of food, aligns with Samuel's anticipated meeting with Saul.
Here we encounter the heart of God's plan. The LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before (v. 15) that He would send a man from Benjamin to be captain over my people Israel (v. 16). The Lord's motivation is revealing: I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me. God acts in response to His people's need for deliverance from the Philistines, not because the nation deserved it, but because of His covenant mercy. When Samuel sees Saul, the Lord confirms, this same shall reign over my people (v. 17). In verse 20, Samuel speaks prophetically about the donkeys being found and then pivots immediately to Israel's desire—is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house? This signals that Saul's calling transcends his family's interests; he is being prepared for national leadership.
Saul's response reveals genuine humility. He protests that he is a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes and from the least of all the families (v. 21). This humility is commendable, yet it also foreshadows a tension: Saul will later struggle to maintain this posture before God. Samuel honors Saul publicly, seating him in the chiefest place (v. 22) and serving him the reserved shoulder—a choice portion (vv. 23-24). The next morning, Samuel calls Saul to the rooftop (v. 26) to shew thee the word of God (v. 27), preparing him for his anointing and purpose.
God often works through the ordinary circumstances of our lives—lost keys, unexpected conversations, chance meetings—to direct us toward His greater purposes. Like Saul, we may feel unqualified or small, yet the Lord sees what we cannot see about ourselves. Our responsibility is to remain humble, obedient, and attentive to His voice, trusting that He orchestrates our path according to His perfect wisdom and timing.
