Study Notes — 1 Samuel 15
6 sectionsFirst Samuel 15 records a pivotal moment in Israel's history—the moment when King Saul's reign begins its irreversible decline. The LORD commands Saul through the prophet Samuel to execute complete judgment against the Amalekites, a long-time enemy of Israel. Though Saul appears to obey, he secretly preserves the best of the spoil and the Amalekite king, Agag. This act of disobedience—choosing partial obedience and personal gain over total surrender to God's word—becomes the basis for God's rejection of Saul as king. The chapter illustrates a timeless principle: obedience to God's word matters far more than our own religious intentions or offerings.
Samuel reminds Saul of his anointing and calls him to listen to the LORD's voice (verses 1–2). God recalls the ancient evil of Amalek, who ambushed Israel after the exodus from Egypt (Exodus 17). The command is explicit and unambiguous: utterly destroy everything belonging to the Amalekites—people, animals, possessions—with no exceptions (verse 3). Saul responds by mobilizing a massive army of 210,000 soldiers and positioning himself strategically (verses 4–5). On the surface, Saul appears obedient and decisive. The reader might assume he will fully comply with God's instruction.
Application: Do we listen carefully to God's word, or do we hear only what we want to hear? Saul heard the command clearly; the problem was not understanding, but willingness.
Saul shows some compassion by warning the Kenites to flee before the destruction (verse 6), which is commendable and reflects his awareness of their past kindness to Israel. He defeats the Amalekites militarily (verses 7–8), but then the tragic pivot: he keeps King Agag alive and preserves "the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs" (verse 9). He destroys only the worthless animals. This is not mere military judgment; it is selective disobedience motivated by greed and pride. Saul rationalizes his actions, convincing himself and his army that the good animals should be kept for sacrifice—a religious justification for sinful compromise.
Application: Partial obedience is complete disobedience. We cannot edit God's commands to suit our preferences or comfort, no matter how reasonable our excuses seem.
The LORD informs Samuel that He regrets making Saul king because Saul has "turned back from following me" (verse 11). Samuel is deeply grieved and intercedes in prayer all night (verse 11). When he confronts Saul in the morning, Saul claims complete success: "I have performed the commandment of the LORD" (verse 13). But Samuel immediately hears the bleating of sheep and lowing of oxen—the evidence of Saul's lie (verse 14). Saul then attempts to cover his disobedience with a pious excuse, claiming the animals were reserved for sacrifice (verse 15).
Application: We cannot hide our disobedience from God, and our religious language cannot cover our true motives. God sees the heart.
Samuel reminds Saul of his humble origins and his divine calling (verse 17). The LORD's command was unmistakable: utterly destroy the Amalekites (verse 18). Saul's sin was clear—he obeyed the spoil rather than obeying God's voice (verse 19). When Saul continues to deny responsibility, blaming the people (verses 20–21), Samuel delivers the most important theological statement of the chapter: "Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice" (verse 22). Rebellion is compared to witchcraft, and stubbornness to idolatry (verse 23)—serious spiritual crimes. Because Saul rejected God's word, God rejects him from kingship.
Application: No amount of religious activity compensates for disobedience. God values our obedience to His word above all our offerings.
Saul confesses his sin (verse 24), but his confession is incomplete—he emphasizes how he feared the people rather than owning his own choice. Samuel's refusal to return with him (verse 26) and the symbolic tearing of his robe (verse 27) signal that God's decision is final and irreversible (verses 28–29). Though Saul receives a moment of public honor (verse 30), Samuel executes Agag (verses 32–33) and withdraws from Saul (verse 34). The chapter closes with the haunting reality: Samuel grieves for Saul, and the LORD grieves that He ever made him king (verse 35)
