Study Notes — 1 Samuel 28
6 sectionsFirst Samuel 28 presents one of Scripture's most sobering accounts of spiritual desperation and divine judgment. As King Saul faces the Philistine army and finds himself abandoned by God, he commits a grave sin by consulting a medium at Endor to communicate with the deceased prophet Samuel. This chapter illustrates the tragic consequences of persistent disobedience, the reality of God's withdrawal of His presence, and the futility of seeking guidance through forbidden spiritual means. What unfolds is not a vindication of mediumship, but rather a final, devastating confirmation that Saul's kingdom is lost and his fate sealed.
The Philistines mobilize for war against Israel, and David finds himself in an awkward position as vassal to King Achish (v. 1-2). Meanwhile, we learn that the godly prophet Samuel has died and been buried in Ramah (v. 3)—a detail heavy with significance. Saul, recognizing the superior Philistine forces, becomes gripped with terror (v. 5). The loss of his spiritual mentor and his own spiritual isolation intensify his fear. Note that verse 3 also reminds us that Saul had previously expelled mediums and spiritists from the land (v. 3)—a lawful act consistent with Deuteronomy 18:10-11. This sets the irony sharply in relief: the king who banned such practitioners is now about to become their client.
In his desperation, Saul inquires of the Lord through every legitimate means—dreams, the Urim (the priestly casting lots), and prophets—but receives no answer (v. 6). Silence from God is itself a judgment. Rather than repent or wait on the Lord, Saul demands that his servants find him a woman with a familiar spirit, then travels by night in disguise to the witch of Endor (v. 7-8). His request reveals the depth of his spiritual blindness: he wants her to conjure up Samuel so he might learn what to do (v. 11). This is not mere curiosity—it is an act of rebellion against God's law and a rejection of His silence as His answer.
The woman recognizes Saul and cries out, having realized his identity (v. 12). When she describes seeing "gods ascending out of the earth" and "an old man" in a mantle (v. 13-14), Saul perceives it is Samuel. Whether this appearance represents the actual spirit of Samuel raised by divine permission (to deliver God's final word) or a deceptive manifestation engineered by the medium, the message delivered is unmistakably from God. Samuel immediately challenges Saul: "Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up?" (v. 15). Saul's anguished explanation reveals a man totally abandoned—God has departed, He answers no more, and desperation has driven him to forbidden means.
Samuel's response is pitiless: the Lord has become Saul's enemy (v. 16). Samuel rehearses Saul's cardinal sin—his disobedience regarding Amalek—and announces that the kingdom is rent from him and given to David (v. 17-18). Worst of all, Samuel pronounces that tomorrow Saul and his sons will be dead, and Israel will fall to the Philistines (v. 19). Saul collapses in abject terror, without strength or food (v. 20). This is the nadir of his reign: a king once chosen by God, now utterly forsaken.
Even in judgment's shadow, there is a touch of human kindness. The woman, recognizing Saul's state, urges him to eat (v. 21-22). She has risked her life for him; now she offers nourishment. Though Saul initially refuses, his servants and the woman compel him to take bread and meat (v. 23-25). This small act of compassion provides no comfort to a man under God's judgment, but it does preserve Saul's strength for the final battle ahead.
This chapter warns us gravely against spiritual shortcuts and the sin of persistent disobedience. When we ignore God's voice and reject His discipline, silence follows—and desperation often drives us toward false sources of hope. Our safeguard is humble repentance, trust in God's Word, and submission to His will, even when His way seems silent or slow. The only true source of wisdom and direction is the living God.
