Study Notes — 1 Samuel 2
7 sections1 Samuel 2 presents a striking contrast between two spiritual realities in Israel. It opens with Hannah's magnificent prayer of thanksgiving and worship, celebrating God's sovereignty and justice—a hymn that echoes throughout Scripture and prefigures Mary's Magnificat in Luke 1. The chapter then shifts to expose the spiritual corruption of Eli's sons, who abuse their priestly office for personal gain, and records God's judgment against Eli's house. Throughout, young Samuel emerges as a faithful servant, growing in favor with both God and man, while those who despise the Lord face His righteous discipline.
Hannah opens with exuberant praise, declaring that her heart rejoices in the LORD and her horn (a symbol of strength and dignity) is exalted through Him. Her mouth is enlarged—she speaks boldly—because she has experienced God's salvation. This is not merely personal happiness; it is deep spiritual joy rooted in God's character. Verses 2-3 establish the theological foundation: there is none holy as the LORD, and He alone is our rock. She then warns against proud speech, recognizing that the LORD is a God of knowledge who weighs all actions. Hannah teaches us that true worship flows from recognizing God's holiness and our accountability before Him.
Hannah's prayer celebrates God's sovereign justice through poetic reversals. The mighty are humbled, the weak strengthened; the full hire themselves for bread while the hungry are satisfied; the barren bears seven children while the fruitful grows feeble. These are not random occurrences but expressions of God's active governance. Verses 6-8 declare that the LORD killeth and maketh alive, makes poor and rich, brings low and lifts up. He raises the poor from dust and sets beggars among princes. This theology profoundly influenced the Magnificat and teaches believers that God's kingdom operates on principles opposite to the world's values—faith, not power; humility, not pride; dependence, not self-sufficiency.
The prayer concludes with assurance that the LORD will keep the feet of his saints, while the wicked shall be silenced in darkness. Verse 10 prophetically points forward to the coming king—the anointed one—to whom God will give strength. Some scholars see here a messianic hint, ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Hannah teaches that belonging to God brings divine protection and that He will ultimately vindicate His people.
The narrative now shifts. Samuel ministers faithfully before the LORD, but Eli's sons are described as sons of Belial (worthless, corrupt men) who do not know the LORD. Verses 13-16 detail their greed: they demand raw meat before the fat is burned to God, taking more than their lawful portion and using force when necessary. This grievously abuses the sacrificial system. Verse 17 emphasizes the sin of the young men was very great because men abhorred the offering of the LORD—their corruption was causing the people to despise worship itself.
Samuel, by contrast, ministers as a child in a linen ephod, and his mother faithfully brings him a new coat yearly. The LORD visits Hannah with three sons and two daughters. Verse 26 is pivotal: Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men—a statement echoing Jesus' own development in Luke 2:52.
A man of God pronounces judgment: because Eli honored his sons above God, the LORD will cut off his arm and establish a faithful priest instead. This prophecy points toward Samuel's own prophetic ministry and Israel's future priesthood under the Davidic covenant.
This chapter challenges us to examine our own hearts: Do we truly honor God above all else? Do we serve faithfully like Samuel, or compromise like Eli's sons? Hannah's prayer reminds us that God overturns worldly values and exalts the humble. Our faithfulness matters eternally.
