Study Notes — 1 Kings 15
4 sections1 Kings 15 presents a striking contrast between two kingdoms and two kinds of leadership. The chapter opens with Abijam's brief and spiritually troubled reign in Judah (verses 1–8), then transitions to his son Asa, who becomes one of Judah's finest kings—a leader whose heart remained devoted to the LORD despite significant political challenges (verses 9–24). Meanwhile, in the northern kingdom of Israel, the narrative reveals the spiritual and political chaos that follows when leaders reject God's ways, as both Nadab and his successor Baasha continue the idolatry introduced by Jeroboam (verses 25–34). This chapter illustrates the principle that genuine blessing flows from obedience to God, while persistent rebellion leads inevitably to judgment and instability.
Abijam becomes king of Judah in the eighteenth year of Jeroboam's reign, but his three-year reign is marked by spiritual failure. Despite being David's descendant, he "walked in all the sins of his father" (verse 3) and his heart was not perfect with the LORD. However, the narrative introduces a profound mercy: "Nevertheless for David's sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem" (verse 4). This "lamp" refers to the continuation of David's dynasty—a promise God had made to David himself (2 Samuel 7:12–16). Even in Abijam's unfaithfulness, God preserves the royal line not because of Abijam's worthiness, but because of His covenant loyalty to David, who had been faithful to Him (verse 5). This teaches us that God's promises are sure; they rest on His character and covenant, not on human merit. Abijam dies and is buried in Jerusalem, but leaves no lasting legacy of faithfulness.
When Asa begins his forty-one-year reign, he does "that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father" (verse 11). Unlike his predecessor, Asa pursues genuine spiritual reform: he removes the sodomites (shrine prostitutes involved in idolatrous worship) and destroys the idols his ancestors had made (verse 12). Remarkably, he even removes his own mother from her position as queen because she had made an idol in a grove—an act demonstrating that his commitment to God's law supersedes family loyalty (verse 13). Though he doesn't remove all the high places (unauthorized worship sites), his heart remained "perfect with the LORD all his days" (verse 14).
When Baasha of Israel threatens Judah by building a fortress at Ramah to cut off trade, Asa initially responds by sending tribute to Ben-Hadad of Syria to break Baasha's alliance (verses 17–19). While this diplomatic strategy succeeds militarily (verses 20–22), this decision reveals a moment of weakness—later, the prophet Hanani will rebuke Asa for relying on Syria rather than on God (2 Chronicles 16:7–9). Nevertheless, Asa's long reign demonstrates that wholehearted commitment to the LORD, coupled with practical leadership and religious reformation, brings stability and blessing to a nation.
In stark contrast, Nadab and Baasha perpetuate Jeroboam's idolatry and evil (verses 26, 34). Nadab is assassinated by Baasha after only two years (verses 27–28), and Baasha then systematically destroys Jeroboam's entire house—"he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed" (verse 29). This fulfills the prophecy spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite (verse 29), showing that God's judgment against Jeroboam's sin is being executed. Yet Baasha inherits the very same idolatry, perpetuating the cycle of rebellion and instability.
Asa's example challenges believers to prioritize spiritual reformation over comfort or family tradition. His willingness to remove idols—even from his own household—reminds us that serving God faithfully sometimes requires difficult decisions. We too are called to examine our hearts, remove anything that competes with Christ's lordship, and trust Him rather than the "Ben-Hadads" of this world. When we do, we experience the stability and blessing that come from a heart devoted wholly to God.
