Study Notes — 1 Kings 2
4 sectionsFirst Kings chapter 2 records David's final charge to Solomon and the consolidation of Solomon's kingdom through the removal of threats to his throne. As David approaches death, he imparts both spiritual wisdom and practical counsel to his son, reminding him that obedience to God's law is the foundation of lasting prosperity. The chapter then narrates how Solomon, with God's establishment, systematically removes those who had opposed or threatened the kingdom—Adonijah, Abiathar, Joab, and Shimei—thereby securing his rule and fulfilling God's promise to David that his line would endure.
David, nearing the end of his life, calls Solomon to both strength and faithfulness. In verse 2, he exhorts his son to "be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man"—a call not merely to physical courage but to spiritual maturity and resolute leadership. More importantly, in verses 3-4, David emphasizes that Solomon's true security lies in keeping God's covenant: walking in the Lord's ways, keeping statutes, commandments, judgments, and testimonies "as it is written in the law of Moses." David reminds Solomon that God's promise of an enduring dynasty is conditional on faithful obedience (v. 4).
In verses 5-9, David gives Solomon guidance about three men: Joab, Barzillai, and Shimei. Regarding Joab, who had shed innocent blood by killing Abner and Amasa, David instructs Solomon to ensure justice is served. The instruction to handle Joab "according to thy wisdom" recognizes Solomon's authority while acknowledging that bloodguilt cannot go unpunished. Conversely, David charges Solomon to show kindness to Barzillai's sons, remembering their loyalty during Absalom's rebellion. For Shimei, who cursed David, Solomon is told to bring his "hoar head down to the grave with blood"—fulfilling an oath while ensuring that Shimei's curse does not go unpunished.
Verse 10 records David's death and burial in the city of David, concluding his forty-year reign. Verse 11 provides a summary: seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. Verse 12 marks the transition: "Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly." This statement affirms that God's hand was upon Solomon's reign from its inception.
The remainder of the chapter shows how Solomon removed four major obstacles to stable rule. First, Adonijah, David's elder son who had previously attempted to seize the throne, makes a seemingly innocent request through Bathsheba for Abishag the Shunnamite as wife (vv. 13-21). Solomon immediately perceives this as another power play—possession of the king's concubine was tantamount to a claim on the throne. Solomon's response is swift and decisive: Adonijah is executed (vv. 22-25).
Second, Abiathar the priest, who supported Adonijah, is removed from his office and banished to Anathoth, though spared death due to his past faithfulness (vv. 26-27). This fulfills God's word concerning judgment on the house of Eli.
Third, Joab, also an Adonijah supporter, flees to the altar seeking sanctuary. Solomon orders his execution there, justifying it on the grounds that Joab's innocent bloodshed must be avenged (vv. 28-34). Benaiah, Joab's successor, is appointed commander.
Finally, Shimei is restricted to Jerusalem with a death sentence if he departs (vv. 36-37). When he violates this oath three years later to retrieve fugitive servants (vv. 39-40), Solomon executes him, declaring that in doing so, the throne is established and blessed (vv. 41-46).
This chapter teaches us that true leadership rests upon obedience to God's Word and the wise exercise of authority. Solomon's actions, though severe by modern standards, demonstrate the biblical principle that rulers are God's ministers of justice. For believers today, the lesson is clear: seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, maintain covenant faithfulness, and trust that God will establish what He has promised—not through our scheming or compromise, but through faithful obedience to His truth.
