Study Notes — Ezekiel 16
8 sectionsEzekiel 16 presents one of Scripture's most vivid and painful prophetic metaphors: Jerusalem as an abandoned infant whom God rescues, nurtures, and elevates to beauty and dignity, only to see her become unfaithful. Through the imagery of a wife who commits adultery and harlotry, God exposes Jerusalem's spiritual infidelity—her turning to idolatry and foreign alliances despite His covenant love. Yet even amid judgment, the chapter concludes with a stunning promise of restoration and an everlasting covenant, revealing God's relentless grace toward His wayward people.
God commands Ezekiel to confront Jerusalem with her origins. She was born of pagan stock—Amorite father and Hittite mother (v. 3)—and left to die unwanted in an open field, uncleaned and unswaddled. This language depicts complete rejection and worthlessness. The pagan parentage is not literal genealogy but a spiritual metaphor: Jerusalem began in spiritual darkness and deserved no hope. The vivid description of abandonment emphasizes the depths from which God's grace would lift her.
In verses 6–7, the turning point arrives: God passes by, commands her to live, and causes her to flourish. The phrase "spread my skirt over thee" (v. 8) is covenant language, echoing Ruth 3:9, signifying marriage and protection. God washes away her blood (v. 9), anoints her, clothes her in fine linen and silk, adorns her with gold and jewels (vv. 10–12), and feeds her the best food (v. 13). She becomes a beautiful kingdom, renowned among nations. Every blessing—beauty, prosperity, honor—flows directly from God's initiative and generosity. This section reveals the heart of God: He takes the worthless and makes them precious, not for their merit but for His covenantal love.
Tragically, Jerusalem forgets her Savior and trusts in her own beauty (v. 15). She becomes a harlot, engaging in religious prostitution with every passer-by. She takes God's gifts—garments, gold, silver, even the sacred food and oil—and uses them in idol worship (vv. 17–19). Most shockingly, she sacrifices her own children to idols (v. 20). This is not mere moral failure; it is covenant-breaking betrayal. The sin is compounded because she has forgotten her desperate origins (v. 22). Ingratitude fuels infidelity.
Jerusalem's harlotry escalates. She builds shrines on every street corner (vv. 24–25) and enters into unholy alliances with Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon (vv. 26–29). Verse 31 makes a critical point: unlike common prostitutes who receive payment, Jerusalem pays her lovers—she actively pursues foreign powers and pagan religions. This reversal highlights the madness of her infidelity.
God will gather all Jerusalem's "lovers" to expose her shame and execute judgment. Her enemies will strip her, stone her, and burn her houses (vv. 39–41). This describes the Babylonian siege and exile. Yet even judgment serves a purpose: "I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot" (v. 41). God's fury will eventually rest (v. 42).
Jerusalem is worse than her sister kingdoms. Even Sodom did not commit sins as grievous as hers (v. 48). Her shameful proverb will be repeated: "As is the mother, so is her daughter" (v. 44).
The chapter's climax reverses everything. God promises to restore Sodom, Samaria, and Jerusalem—but Jerusalem's restoration comes in the midst of the others, humbling her (v. 54). Most remarkably, verses 60–63 unveil grace: "I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant" (v. 60). Despite her unfaithfulness, God's covenant stands forever. She will remember and be ashamed, but God will be pacified toward her.
This chapter speaks to every believer's tendency toward spiritual unfaithfulness. We are rescued from spiritual death by Christ's love, adorned with His righteousness, yet we often chase worthless substitutes. The call is remembrance: recall what Christ has done, repent of our adultery toward other loves, and trust His promise that His covenant with us—sealed in Christ—is everlasting and cannot be revoked by our failure.
