Ezekiel 36

Ezekiel 36 is a powerful declaration of God's coming restoration of Israel after the judgment of exile. The chapter opens with a prophecy of vindication against the surrounding nations who mocked and took possession of Israel's land, then pivots to God's promise of spiritual and physical renewal for His people. The heart of this passage reveals that God's restoration is ultimately motivated not by Israel's merit, but by His zealous concern for His own holy name, which had been profaned among the nations. This chapter beautifully illustrates God's grace and sovereign faithfulness to His covenant people.

The prophet is commanded to address the mountains of Israel directly, declaring God's word against those who have seized and mocked the land. Verses 2–3 reveal the enemy's boastful claim: "the ancient high places are ours in possession." The surrounding nations, particularly Edom (mentioned in verse 5), had taken advantage of Israel's exile to occupy and demean the land. The mountains and hills, representing the territory itself, have become an object of shame and derision.

God's response is emphatic: He speaks in jealousy and fury (verse 6). This jealousy is not petty but the righteous zeal of a covenant God whose land and people have been violated. Verse 7 contains the assurance that though Israel bore shame, the surrounding nations will ultimately bear their own shame. Application: Even when God's people face mockery or oppression, God's character is at stake. He does not abandon His own.

The tone shifts dramatically from judgment to promise. God declares, "I am for you" (verse 9)—a declaration of His presence and commitment. The land will be cultivated, populated, and rebuilt (verses 9–11). Verse 11 includes the remarkable promise that God will do better unto you than at your beginnings—suggesting a restoration that exceeds even the glorious days of old.

Verses 13–15 address a bitter complaint: the land is said to "devour men" and cause nations to fall. This reflects the famine and death that marked the exile period. God promises to reverse this completely—the land will sustain life rather than destroy it, and the reproach of the nations will be removed forever. Application: God's restoration is total and touches every dimension of life—spiritual, physical, and communal. His promises are not partial but comprehensive.

This section reveals the doctrinal heart of the chapter. Israel's own defilement—their bloodshed and idolatry (verses 17–18)—warranted judgment and scattering (verses 19–20). Yet here is the crucial pivot: God's motivation for restoration is not Israel's repentance or worthiness, but rather the sanctification of His holy name (verses 22–23). The nations had blasphemed God's reputation when they saw His people cast out, saying, "These are the people of the LORD, and are gone forth out of his land." God acts to vindicate His character and demonstrate His sovereign power to the watching world. Application: God's grace is not earned; it flows from His commitment to His own glory and the integrity of His name. This should humble us and inspire grateful worship.

God promises both regathering (verse 24) and regeneration. The sprinkling of clean water and the granting of a new heart and new spirit (verses 25–26) foreshadow the work of the Holy Spirit in salvation. Verse 27 is crucial: "I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes." God Himself will enable obedience—not through external coercion but through inward transformation. Verse 31 shows that this renewal produces genuine repentance and shame for past sin. Application: True restoration always involves the heart. External blessing without spiritual transformation is incomplete.

The restored land will become like the garden of Eden (verse 35), a striking symbol of paradise restored. The surrounding nations will witness God's rebuilding work and acknowledge His power (verse 36). The chapter concludes with the promise that God will be inquired of by His people—they will seek Him in prayer and relationship—and He will increase them like a flock (verse 37). Application: God's work of restoration brings blessing that is visibly evident and universally recognized.
