Ezekiel 48

Chapter 48 concludes Ezekiel's vision of Israel's restoration with a detailed description of how the land will be divided among the twelve tribes in the future kingdom. The chapter emphasizes the centrality of God's sanctuary (the holy temple) to the entire nation's life and geography. Rather than the unequal, disputed divisions that characterized the historical settlement, this vision presents a perfect, orderly distribution of territory—seven tribes north of the sanctuary, five tribes south—with the priestly and Levitical portions positioned around God's house. The closing image of the city named "The LORD is there" (verse 35) reminds us that true national blessing flows from God's present dwelling among His people.

Ezekiel begins by listing the territorial allotments for the northern tribes: Dan, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, Reuben, and Judah. Each tribe receives a strip of land running east to west, arranged in a carefully ordered sequence. This orderly distribution contrasts sharply with the historical settlement recorded in Joshua, which involved conflict, incomplete conquests, and tribal rivalries. The repeated formula—"from the east side unto the west side"—emphasizes symmetry and divine organization. God is showing that in the restored kingdom, there will be no disputed borders, no tribal warfare over land. Application: This vision reminds us that God's perfect plan for His people includes order, fairness, and peace—qualities that point us toward the ultimate peace found in Christ.

The focus now shifts to the center of the land: a massive square of 25,000 reeds (approximately 8.75 miles) dedicated entirely to God's purposes. Within this "oblation" sits the temple sanctuary (verse 8). The priestly portion (verses 10–11) goes specifically to "the priests that are sanctified of the sons of Zadok; which have kept my charge." This allocation rewards priestly faithfulness—they alone maintained their covenant loyalty when Israel and the Levites generally went astray. Verse 14 forbids any sale or exchange of this holy land; it belongs eternally to the LORD. The emphasis on the priests' prior faithfulness and the sacred permanence of God's sanctuary underscores that genuine service to God is recognized and honored by Him.

Around the sacred center, space is set apart for a city (verses 15–18), with suburbs providing room for those who serve the city's functions. Verse 19 declares that all tribes will contribute workers to support the city—a picture of unified national service. The "prince" receives territories on either side of the central holy portion (verses 21–22), positioned to benefit from proximity to God's sanctuary yet clearly subordinate to it. The prince has wealth and honor, but the sanctuary remains supremely central. This arrangement reflects a theocracy in which earthly rulers serve God's purposes rather than rule independently.

The southern tribes—Benjamin, Simeon, Issachar, Zebulun, and Gad—receive their portions in the same orderly fashion as the north. The city's four sides each have three gates, and these gates bear the names of all twelve tribes (verses 31–34). This is theologically significant: every tribe has access to the city; no tribe is excluded from the community centered on God's presence. The vision concludes with the city's perimeter measure (18,000 measures) and its new name: "The LORD is there" (verse 35, Hebrew: Jehovah Shammah). This name captures the entire vision's purpose—God's dwelling place is restored, and His presence defines the nation's identity and blessing.
