Study Notes — Ephesians 6
5 sectionsEphesians 6 concludes Paul's practical instruction on Christian living by addressing family and workplace relationships, then pivots dramatically to the spiritual battle every believer faces. The chapter opens with Paul's exhortation to children, parents, servants, and masters—showing that the gospel transforms our most ordinary human relationships. Yet the climax of the epistle arrives in verse 10, where Paul summons believers to spiritual warfare, equipping them with the armor of God to stand firm against demonic opposition. This chapter masterfully shows that authentic Christian living is both deeply relational and intensely spiritual.
Paul begins by commanding children to obey their parents in the Lord (v. 1). This obedience reflects God's created order and is described as "right"—not merely cultural preference, but a moral principle. He reinforces this with the Fifth Commandment (v. 2), which carries the first promise: that it may go well with you and you may live long on the earth (v. 3). Paul understands that honoring parents is foundational to a stable, flourishing society.
Fathers receive a special word: do not provoke your children to wrath (v. 4). Rather than harsh domination, Christian parenting means training children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord—a tender, instructive approach rooted in gospel grace. Fathers must lead with patience and wisdom, not exasperation.
Servants are next addressed (v. 5). While this passage has been misused historically, Paul's instruction is revolutionary: serve as unto Christ, not merely to please human masters. Verses 6–8 emphasize that work done with a sincere heart, from good will, and as service to the Lord will be rewarded by Him—whether bond or free. This elevates every laborer's dignity in Christ.
Masters receive reciprocal instruction (v. 9): do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening. They too answer to a Master in heaven before whom there is no partiality. This mutual accountability in Christ transforms workplace culture from exploitation to stewardship and respect.
The tone shifts dramatically at verse 10: Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Our strength is not our own but Christ's. Verses 11–12 reveal why: we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world. Our true battle is spiritual, not merely earthly. Many believers live unaware of this reality.
Paul prescribes the whole armour of God (vv. 14–17). Each piece has specific significance: truth (loins girt about), righteousness (breastplate), the gospel of peace (shoes), faith (shield), salvation (helmet), and the word of God (sword). These are not our manufacture but God's provision. Notably, the sword alone is offensive; the others are defensive—reminding us that God's truth is our only aggressive weapon.
Victory requires praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit (v. 18). Prayer is both petition and watchfulness. Paul requests prayer for boldness in gospel witness (vv. 19–20), showing that even apostles need the church's intercession. He is an ambassador in bonds—imprisoned yet unashamed.
Tychicus carries news of Paul's condition (vv. 21–22). The epistle closes with a benediction of peace, love, faith, and grace to all who love Christ in sincerity (vv. 23–24).
Believers today must embrace both the relational and spiritual dimensions of this chapter. In families and workplaces, treat others as Christ would, recognizing His lordship in everyday life. Simultaneously, remember that your deepest struggle is not with circumstances or people, but with spiritual forces—fought through prayer, God's Word, and unwavering faith. Stand firm in Christ.
