5 sectionsEphesians 5 is one of the most practically transformative passages in the New Testament, calling believers to imitate God's character through a radically renewed life. Paul begins by commanding the church to walk in love as Christ loved us, then systematically addresses how this love must guard us from sexual sin, covetousness, and foolish speech. The chapter moves from individual purity to corporate witness, from personal holiness to the marriage relationship—showing that our deepest relationships are meant to reflect nothing less than Christ's sacrificial love for the church.
Paul opens with a radical call: "Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children." The word translated "followers" carries the sense of imitators—we are to mirror God's character because we are His beloved children. Verse 2 anchors this in the supreme example: Christ's self-giving love. The phrase "offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour" echoes Old Testament worship language, reminding us that Christ's death is the consummate act of love and obedience.
Verses 3–5 then list what cannot coexist with this calling: fornication (sexual immorality), uncleanness, and covetousness. Paul's concern is not merely outward behavior but the thought-life too—even naming these things should be foreign to the saints. Verse 5 delivers a solemn warning: those who practice such things have no inheritance in God's kingdom. This is not loss of salvation for believers, but rather the reality that unrepentant indulgence in these sins proves one has never genuinely believed.
Application: Believers are called to an exacting standard because we bear God's name. Our pursuit of holiness is not legalism but love-driven imitation of our Father.
Paul warns against being deceived by those who justify sin with empty arguments (v. 6). The wrath of God falls on those who live in disobedience, so believers must separate themselves from such company (v. 7). The metaphor shifts powerfully in verse 8: "ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord." This is not metaphorical only—believers are ontologically transformed, relocated from darkness into light.
Verse 11 instructs us to have no fellowship with "unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." This does not mean harsh judgment of unbelievers, but rather that our presence and witness should expose sin's emptiness. Verse 14's citation (likely from an early Christian hymn) calls the spiritually asleep to awaken—a call to both unbelievers and drowsy saints.
Application: Our transformed identity in Christ means we cannot remain neutral about sin. Light by nature exposes darkness; holy living is its own testimony.
Verse 15 exhorts circumspect, wise living in evil days. "Redeeming the time" (v. 16) means purchasing back opportunity—using our days intentionally for kingdom purposes. Verse 17 urges understanding God's will, and verse 18 contrasts drunkenness (loss of control) with being "filled with the Spirit" (yielding to divine control).
The result of Spirit-fullness is overflow: psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, thanksgiving (vv. 19–20). This is worship as a lifestyle, not merely Sunday activity. Verse 21 introduces the relational ethic that follows: mutual submission in the fear of God—the foundation for healthy marriages.
Application: The Christian life is not a white-knuckled effort but a Spirit-empowered overflow. When filled with the Spirit, our natural response is gratitude and worship.
The marriage instructions (often misunderstood) are set within Spirit-filling and mutual submission. Wives are called to submit to husbands "as unto the Lord" (v. 22), and husbands are commanded to love sacrificially—"even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it" (v. 25). This is not servitude but covenant partnership modeled on Christ's redemptive love. Verses 26–27 reveal marriage's ultimate purpose: Christ sanctifies the church, presenting her spotless and holy. Husbands are to nurture and cherish their wives as their own bodies (vv. 28–29), grounded in the mystery that marriage reflects Christ and the church (v. 32).
Application: Christian marriage is a gospel parable. Spouses display Christ's sacrificial love and the church's responsive trust to a watching world.
