Study Notes — Genesis 35
5 sectionsGenesis 35 records a pivotal spiritual renewal in Jacob's life as he returns to Bethel to fulfill a vow made years earlier when fleeing from Esau. This chapter marks a decisive break with idolatry, a fresh encounter with God's covenant promises, and the completion of Jacob's transformation into Israel. Yet it also weaves together profound joy and sorrow—the birth of Benjamin alongside Rachel's tragic death—reminding us that God's purposes often unfold amid both blessing and loss. Throughout, we see God faithfully shepherding His people and confirming His promise that Jacob's descendants will become a great nation.
God commands Jacob to go up to Bethel and build an altar, recalling the divine encounter Jacob experienced there when fleeing Esau (Genesis 28). This is not merely a nostalgic journey; it is a call to settle accounts with God and remove anything that might compromise his devotion. Jacob's response is immediate and thorough. He commands his household to put away strange gods—likely idols brought from Mesopotamia by his wives and servants—and to cleanse themselves and change their garments (v. 2–3). This preparation reflects the Old Testament understanding that approaching God requires both physical and spiritual readiness. Verse 4 shows the people's obedience: they surrendered their idols and earrings, which Jacob buried beneath an oak near Shechem. The terror of God that fell upon surrounding cities (v. 5) protected Jacob's company during their vulnerable journey, demonstrating God's active care for His covenant people.
Jacob arrives at Bethel (also called Luz) and builds an altar, naming the place Elbethel ("God of Bethel"), commemorating his earlier vision. The insertion of Deborah's death and burial (v. 8)—Rebekah's nurse—subtly reminds us of how time has passed and how God's promises work across generations. In verse 9, God appears again and blesses Jacob personally. Most significantly, God announces Jacob's new name: Israel, meaning "he who strives with God" or "God prevails" (v. 10). This name change, like Abram's to Abraham, signifies a transformed identity and deepened relationship with God. The covenant promises then flow forth abundantly: Jacob will be fruitful, multiply into a great nation, and kings will descend from him (v. 11). The land promised to Abraham and Isaac is now confirmed to Jacob and his seed (v. 12). These promises find their ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the King of kings and Savior of all nations who comes through Jacob's line.
After God departs, Jacob sets up a pillar of stone, anoints it, and names the place Bethel (v. 14–15)—an act of worship and remembrance. The joy of covenant renewal, however, is shadowed by tragedy. While traveling toward Bethlehem, Rachel goes into difficult labor and dies giving birth to Benjamin (v. 16–19). Jacob names the child Benoni ("son of my sorrow"), but Jacob renames him Benjamin ("son of my right hand"), a name of strength and favor. Rachel's death and burial near Bethlehem become a permanent memorial (v. 20), marking the cost of God's unfolding purposes. Yet God's plan continues: Jacob (now Israel) presses forward, and the twelve sons—the foundation of the twelve tribes—are now complete (v. 22–26).
Jacob reaches his father Isaac at Mamre (Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned. Isaac, at 180 years old, dies peacefully—old and full of days—and is buried by his sons Esau and Jacob together, a poignant moment of reconciliation between the brothers over their father's grave.
Genesis 35 challenges us to spiritual renewal: Are there "strange gods"—idols of materialism, pride, or comfort—we need to remove from our hearts? Like Jacob, we are invited to remember God's faithfulness in our past, to cleanse ourselves, and to draw near to Him afresh. Even amid life's sorrows and losses, God's covenant purposes continue. Our role is to trust His promises, worship faithfully, and allow Him to transform us into the people He calls us to be.
