Study Notes — Genesis 37
6 sectionsGenesis 37 marks a pivotal turning point in the biblical narrative, introducing us to Joseph and the circumstances that will eventually position him as a saviour-figure in Egypt. This chapter reveals how God's purposes often work through human jealousy, betrayal, and suffering. Joseph's favoured status and divinely-given dreams provoke his brothers to hatred and conspiracy, culminating in his sale into slavery. Yet beneath this tragic human drama lies the sovereign hand of God, orchestrating events that will ultimately bring salvation to Jacob's entire family and foreshadow Christ's redemptive work.
Jacob now settles permanently in Canaan, the land promised to his fathers. Joseph, at seventeen years old, is introduced as a shepherd with his brothers, yet distinctly set apart. Jacob's love for Joseph is unmistakable: Joseph is "the son of his old age" (v. 3), born to Rachel, Jacob's most beloved wife. This preference is made visible through the famous "coat of many colours"—a symbol of Jacob's special affection and perhaps a sign of Joseph's intended leadership role in the family. Verse 4 captures the tragic consequence: when the brothers see this preferential treatment, hatred takes root. Their inability to "speak peaceably unto him" reveals how family division festers in silence and resentment. This reminds us that parental favouritism, however natural it may feel, can poison family relationships. We must be cautious about how our words and actions communicate preference among those we love.
Joseph's first dream (vv. 5–8) depicts sheaves bowing to his sheaf—a clear symbol of future authority over his brothers. Rather than keep this private, Joseph shares it, which further inflames their jealousy. The brothers' question—"Shalt thou indeed reign over us?" (v. 8)—shows they understand the dream's meaning perfectly. Joseph's second dream (vv. 9–10), where the sun, moon, and eleven stars bow to him, is even more expansive, suggesting authority even over his parents. Jacob himself rebukes Joseph for this dream, though notably he "observed the saying" (v. 11), suggesting he sensed something significant, even if troubling. Joseph's youthful lack of discretion—sharing dreams that naturally provoke envy—teaches us the importance of wisdom in what we communicate and when. Yet God was working through these very dreams to prepare Joseph (and eventually Joseph's family) for what lay ahead.
Jacob sends Joseph to check on his brothers near Shechem. A providential encounter with a stranger redirects Joseph to Dothan, where his brothers have gone. This seemingly small detail sets the stage for everything that follows. Joseph's obedience to his father and his search for his brothers demonstrate a genuine heart, even as his brothers plot against him.
When the brothers spot Joseph approaching, they immediately conspire to kill him, calling him "this dreamer" (v. 19) with scorn. Reuben, the eldest, intervenes to save Joseph's life, suggesting they cast him into a pit instead—planning secretly to rescue him later (vv. 21–22). However, while they eat, Judah proposes selling Joseph to Ishmaelite merchants for twenty pieces of silver (vv. 26–27). The text hints at divine providence: Midianite traders actually extract Joseph from the pit and sell him to the Ishmaelites, who carry him to Egypt (v. 28). What the brothers meant for evil, God would use for good.
The brothers deceive their father with Joseph's bloodied coat, claiming a wild beast devoured him. Jacob's grief is absolute and inconsolable (vv. 34–35). Meanwhile, Joseph is sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's guard—the very placement that will eventually elevate him to power and enable him to save his family.
Genesis 37 teaches us that God's providence transcends human evil. While we must never excuse sin, we can trust that God weaves even our darkest moments into His redemptive purposes. Joseph's suffering was real, but it was never beyond God's sight or control. In our own trials, we may not see God's hand immediately, yet we can rest assured that He is working all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Like Joseph, may we remain faithful and righteous, even when betrayed.
