Genesis 7

Genesis 7 marks the transition from God's command to build the ark to the execution of that command and the beginning of the flood itself. This chapter emphasizes Noah's obedience and righteousness while documenting the catastrophic judgment of God upon all flesh. We see the manifest protection of the Lord upon Noah and his family, the orderly entry of creatures into the ark, and the comprehensive nature of the flood's destruction. The narrative demonstrates both divine judgment and divine mercy operating simultaneously—judgment upon a sinful world, mercy extended to the faithful remnant.

The Lord's opening command, "Come thou and all thy house into the ark," is profoundly personal—it is an invitation to salvation, not merely an instruction. God reminds Noah of the reason for this preservation: "for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation" (v. 1). This affirms that Noah's righteousness, already established in Genesis 6:9, is the basis of God's covenant favor. The instructions regarding clean and unclean animals (vv. 2-3) reflect the distinction found later in the Mosaic Law, showing that God's moral categories existed long before Sinai. Clean animals were taken by sevens (male and female pairs, plus extras), while unclean animals by twos only—ensuring the continuation of sacrificial animals after the flood.

Verse 4 provides the final countdown: "yet seven days" before the forty-day deluge begins. Verse 5 summarizes Noah's response with stunning brevity: "Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him." This is the pattern of true faith—hearing God's Word and obeying it completely, without debate or delay.

Noah is now 600 years old when the flood arrives (v. 6)—a detail that anchors this event in history and emphasizes the span of his life devoted to righteousness and obedience. Verses 7-10 chronicle the entry into the ark: Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives (v. 7), followed by the animals entering "two and two" exactly as God had commanded (v. 9). The repetition of "as God had commanded" (vv. 5, 9, 16) underscores the precision of obedience and the sovereign orchestration of events. After the seven-day waiting period, "the waters of the flood were upon the earth" (v. 10).

The flood's beginning is marked with exact dating (v. 11): the second month, seventeenth day, in Noah's six-hundredth year. The description reveals its cosmic scale: "all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened." This was not merely heavy rain but a catastrophic upheaval involving both subterranean waters and heavenly waters. The rain lasted exactly forty days and nights (v. 12), while the waters rose until they covered "all the high hills...fifteen cubits upward" (vv. 19-20). This was universal in scope—a complete judgment upon the earth.

The death toll is stated with absolute finality: "all flesh died...every man" (vv. 21-22). Yet in the same breath, we are reminded that "Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark" (v. 23). Here is the gospel pattern displayed: judgment and grace coexisting. The waters prevailed for 150 days (v. 24), showing the thoroughness of God's cleansing work.
