Study Notes — Exodus 6
5 sectionsExodus 6 marks a pivotal moment in the redemptive history of God's people. After Moses has encountered repeated rejection and failure, the Lord renews His covenant promises and reassures Moses of His absolute power and faithfulness. This chapter contains the great sevenfold promise of deliverance (verses 6–8), which establishes the theological foundation for the plagues that follow and demonstrates that God's purposes cannot be thwarted by human weakness or Pharaoh's resistance. The genealogical record of Moses and Aaron's lineage serves to legitimize their leadership and root the narrative firmly in Israel's family history.
The chapter opens with the Lord's direct response to Moses' despair. In verse 1, God declares that Moses will witness His mighty hand at work against Pharaoh—not merely requesting, but driving out Israel with overwhelming force. This answers Moses' earlier complaint (5:22–23) that God's name and promises seemed ineffective.
Verses 2–5 present a solemn self-revelation. God reminds Moses of His name—I am the LORD (Yahweh, the covenant-keeping God). Significantly, verse 3 notes that while He appeared to the patriarchs as "God Almighty" (El Shaddai), they did not know Him by His covenant name Yahweh with the same manifestation of redemptive power that is about to unfold. This does not mean they were ignorant of the name, but rather that they did not experience its full significance through deliverance. God reiterates His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give them Canaan, and declares that He has heard Israel's groaning and remembers His covenant. This appeals to God's character—He is not forgetful or indifferent but actively mindful of His people's suffering.
Application: When we face prolonged difficulty, we must remember that God's silence is never indifference. His covenant mercies are sure, even when circumstances seem hopeless.
Here the Lord delivers Israel's charter of liberation in seven consecutive declarations: (1) "I will bring you out from under the burdens"; (2) "I will rid you out of their bondage"; (3) "I will redeem you with a stretched out arm"; (4) "I will rid you out of their bondage" (emphatic repetition); (5) "I will take you to me for a people"; (6) "I will be to you a God"; and (7) "I will bring you in unto the land." The phrase "stretched out arm" (a strong, extended arm) becomes a hallmark of redemptive language throughout Scripture, emphasizing God's active, mighty intervention. The promise culminates not merely in escape but in covenant relationship—becoming God's treasured possession and inheriting the promised land. These verses emphasize that redemption involves relationship, not merely liberation.
Application: True salvation is relational. God doesn't simply extract us from sin's consequences; He adopts us into His family and gives us an inheritance.
Despite this glorious promise, verse 9 records that Israel refused to hear Moses. Their pain and bondage had crushed their hope. Moses then expresses his own inadequacy (verse 12): he is "of uncircumcised lips"—a humble way of saying he lacks eloquence. How can such a man convince Pharaoh? This reveals Moses' human weakness and sets the stage for the Lord's equipping of both Moses and Aaron (verse 13).
The detailed genealogy of Reuben, Simeon, and especially Levi (verses 14–25) establishes the legitimacy of Moses and Aaron's line within Israel's tribal structure. Verse 26–27 emphasize that these are the ones chosen by God to lead Israel out. The final verses (28–30) record God's direct command to Moses to speak all His words to Pharaoh, and Moses again protests his inadequacy—showing his persistent need for encouragement and His reliance on God's power rather than his own.
God's promises are certain regardless of our circumstances or perceived inadequacy. Like Moses and Israel, we may feel overwhelmed by our bondage to sin, fear, or worldly pressure. Yet God calls us into covenant relationship with Him and assures us of His mighty hand. Our weakness is not a disqualification but an invitation to trust His strength. The Lord uses ordinary, faltering people to accomplish extraordinary redemption.
