Study Notes — Exodus 37
6 sectionsExodus 37 records the meticulous construction of the tabernacle's most sacred furnishings—the Ark of the Covenant, the Table of Showbread, the Golden Candlestick, and the Incense Altar. Under the skilled leadership of Bezaleel, these items were crafted with extraordinary care and precious materials, reflecting their central importance in Israel's worship. This chapter demonstrates that true worship of God demands our finest work and deepest reverence, and each piece carries profound spiritual significance pointing toward Christ and His redemptive work.
Bezaleel begins by constructing the Ark itself, the holiest object in all Israel. Measuring 2.5 cubits long, 1.5 cubits wide and high, this wooden chest is overlaid entirely with pure gold—inside and out—signifying God's complete holiness and the purity required in His presence. The crown of gold around it further emphasizes its sanctity (verse 2). Four gold rings and gold-overlaid wooden staves (verses 3–5) allow the priests to carry the Ark without touching it directly, teaching us that God's holiness must be approached with reverence and proper order. This Ark would hold the stone tablets of the Law, representing God's covenant with His people.
The mercy seat—the lid of the Ark—is crafted from pure solid gold, measuring the same length as the Ark but narrower (verse 6). Two golden cherubims (angelic figures) are beaten from a single piece of gold and positioned at each end, their wings spread protectively over the mercy seat, their faces turned toward each other and downward (verses 7–9). This is where God promises to meet with His people (see Exodus 25:22). The mercy seat symbolizes Christ Himself—the place where God's justice and mercy meet, where the blood of atonement is sprinkled, and where sinners encounter divine grace.
The Table is constructed from acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold, measuring 2 cubits long and 1 cubit wide (verses 10–11). It features a decorative border and crown of gold, with four gold rings at the feet to hold the carrying staves (verses 12–15). Upon this table were placed twelve loaves of bread, representing the twelve tribes in God's presence. All the table's vessels—dishes, spoons, bowls, and covers—are fashioned from pure gold (verse 16). This teaches that everything connected to God's presence must reflect His holiness and our commitment to nourishing our souls through His Word and fellowship.
The Candlestick represents one of the most elaborate and beautiful pieces. Crafted from a single beaten piece of pure gold, it features a central shaft with six branches extending from its sides—three on each side (verses 17–19). Each branch is adorned with almond-shaped bowls and decorative knops (buds) and flowers (verses 19–22). The Candlestick held seven lamps providing light in the tabernacle's darkness, symbolizing God's guidance and the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit (verse 23). The entire structure, with all its vessels and snuffers, weighs one talent of gold—approximately 75 pounds—representing the immense value and care devoted to God's house (verse 24).
The final item is the Incense Altar, a square wooden altar 1 cubit by 1 cubit and 2 cubits high, with horn-like projections at its four corners (verse 25). Completely overlaid with pure gold, it features gold rings and staves for transport (verses 26–28). Upon this altar, sweet incense would be burned daily, symbolizing the prayers and intercession of God's people rising heavenward. Verse 29 concludes by noting the preparation of the holy anointing oil and the pure incense, emphasizing that worship requires both proper instruments and proper preparations.
These furnishings remind us that worship is not casual or careless. They point forward to Jesus Christ, who is our Ark (God's presence with us), our Table (our sustenance), our Light (our guidance), and our Intercessor (our prayers before God). As believers, we are now living temples of the Holy Spirit. Let us ask ourselves: Do we approach God with the reverence and care these ancient craftsmen displayed? Are we offering Him our finest—our time, attention, and devotion—or merely our leftovers?
