Exodus 29

Exodus 29 details the solemn and intricate ceremony for consecrating Aaron and his sons as priests of Israel. This chapter prescribes the exact sacrifices, garments, and rituals required to set apart these men for holy service in God's tabernacle. Through washing, clothing, anointing, and multiple offerings, the priesthood is formally established as a mediatorial office between God and His people. This passage demonstrates both God's holiness (requiring careful, prescribed worship) and His grace (providing a way for sinful people to approach Him through appointed representatives).

The chapter opens with the core purpose: to hallow (set apart as holy) Aaron and his sons for priestly ministry. Three animal sacrifices and unleavened bread offerings are assembled—symbols of purity and dedication. The priests are brought to the tabernacle entrance and washed with water (v. 4), signifying ceremonial cleansing before holy service. Aaron is then dressed in the priestly garments: the coat, ephod, breastplate, and girdle (v. 5). Each garment carried spiritual meaning—they visually represented the gravity and dignity of approaching God's presence. These were not mere uniforms but sacred vestments that marked the wearer as set apart for God's work.

The mitre (turban) and holy crown are placed upon Aaron's head, and the anointing oil is poured upon him (vv. 6–7). In Scripture, anointing with oil symbolizes the empowerment and appointment of the Holy Spirit. Aaron's sons receive similar but simpler garments and bonnets, and all are declared consecrated to the priesthood as a perpetual statute (v. 9). This establishes not a temporary office but a lasting institution. The permanence underscores God's intention that His people always have appointed mediators to maintain covenant relationship with Him.

A bullock is brought forward, and Aaron and his sons lay their hands upon its head (v. 10)—a gesture symbolizing the transference of sin and guilt. The animal is killed as a sin offering, its blood applied to the altar horns, and its flesh burned outside the camp (vv. 11–14). This ritual acknowledges that even those chosen for priestly service are themselves sinners in need of atonement. They cannot represent others before God without first making peace with Him. This foreshadows Christ, our ultimate High Priest, who offered Himself as the perfect sin offering.

The first ram is offered as a burnt offering—a sacrifice wholly consumed on the altar, rising as a sweet savour unto the Lord (vv. 15–18). This represents complete dedication. The second ram is handled differently: its blood is placed on the priests' right ears, right thumbs, and right toes (vv. 19–20), symbolizing consecration of hearing, work, and walk. Portions of this ram are waved before the Lord (the wave offering) and become the perpetual portion of the priests (vv. 22–27). God graciously provides for those who serve Him. The ritual meal (vv. 31–33) where Aaron and his sons eat the consecrated flesh further binds them to their sacred calling and to God's covenant.

The entire consecration process is to last seven days, with daily sin offerings and the altar itself sanctified (vv. 35–37). The chapter concludes with the perpetual burnt offering—two lambs daily at the tabernacle door (vv. 38–42). This constant sacrifice reminds Israel that access to God requires ongoing atonement. The final promise is magnificent: "I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God" (v. 45). The priesthood and its sacrifices exist to maintain the relationship between a holy God and His redeemed people.
