Study Notes — Exodus 39
7 sectionsExodus 39 records the completion of the tabernacle furnishings and, most significantly, the beautiful priestly garments made for Aaron and his sons. This chapter celebrates the meticulous craftsmanship of God's people as they finish the work the Lord commanded through Moses. The emphasis falls especially on the ephod and breastplate—garments laden with symbolism that would carry the names of Israel's tribes before God. Throughout this account, we see a people united in obedience, transforming raw materials into sacred objects that would serve as the very center of Israel's worship for generations.
The chapter opens with the completion of the colored garments for the tabernacle service and Aaron's holy garments. The ephod—a sleeveless garment worn over the shoulders—was crafted from blue, purple, scarlet yarn, and fine linen, interwoven with beaten gold thread. This labor-intensive work demanded extraordinary skill. The two onyx stones set on the shoulders bore engraved names of Israel's twelve tribes, serving as a perpetual memorial. When Aaron entered the holy place, he literally carried the tribes of Israel upon his shoulders, symbolizing the priest's intercessory role and the Lord's constant remembrance of His covenant people.
The breastplate—called the breastplate of judgment in Leviticus 8:8—was a double square of fabric approximately nine inches on each side. Within it were arranged four rows of precious gemstones, three stones per row, each engraved with the name of a tribal leader. These twelve stones represented the twelve tribes of Israel. The craftsmanship here was extraordinary: each stone was set in gold bezels and carefully positioned. This sacred object meant that whenever Aaron stood before the Lord in the holy place, all Israel stood with him, their names written on his very heart. The stones' beauty reflected God's own glory and the preciousness of His people in His sight.
The breastplate was securely fastened to the ephod by gold chains and rings, wrapped with a lace of blue—a detail emphasizing both security and the symbolic color of heaven. This fastening ensured the breastplate would not be loosened or separated from the ephod during the priest's sacred service. The blue cord connecting these garments together speaks of the inseparable bond between the priest's intercession and God's covenant with His people. Every detail of construction reflected careful obedience to God's precise instructions.
The robe of the ephod was entirely blue—the color representing heaven and the divine. Alternating around its hem were pomegranates (representing fruitfulness and fullness) and golden bells. When Aaron moved in the holy place, the bells would ring, allowing the congregation outside to know their priest was alive and serving before God. This was a remarkable assurance of God's protection. Aaron and his sons also wore fine linen coats, a mitre (turban), and an ornate girdle—all emphasizing holiness and set-apartness for God's service.
The crowning piece was a pure gold plate inscribed with HOLINESS TO THE LORD—words that captured the entire purpose of the priesthood. This crown, fastened with a blue lace to the mitre, reminded Israel that access to God's presence must be marked by holiness. Verse 32 declares that all the tabernacle work was finally finished—a word echoing God's own declaration in Genesis 2:2.
Every item—from the ark to the altar, from the table to the laver—was brought to Moses for inspection. Verse 43 records that Moses blessed them, affirming their faithful obedience. This completion was a triumph of community effort and unwavering devotion to God's word.
Though we no longer require a physical tabernacle or priestly garments, the principle remains vital: God calls us to excellence in worship and obedience. As believers, we are a kingdom of priests (1 Peter 2:9), called to represent Christ's holiness before a watching world. Our lives—our speech, work ethic, and faithfulness—should bear the inscription "Holiness to the Lord," reflecting God's character in all we do.
