Study Notes — Exodus 36
5 sectionsExodus 36 records the actual construction of the tabernacle, demonstrating that God's purposes are accomplished through Spirit-gifted workers and the faithful giving of His people. The chapter opens with a remarkable problem: the people have given so generously that Moses must actually stop the offerings because there is more than enough. This unusual circumstance teaches us about kingdom priorities—God values wholehearted participation and generous hearts far more than mere abundance of materials. The remainder of the chapter provides detailed specifications for the inner curtains, protective coverings, wooden framework, and veil of the tabernacle, showing that excellence in God's house requires both divine wisdom and human craftsmanship working in harmony.
Exodus 36 begins by reaffirming that Bezaleel, Aholiab, and every skilled worker possessed divinely granted wisdom and understanding (vv. 1–2). This echoes the Spirit-filling described in chapter 35, reminding us that spiritual gifts come directly from the Lord for specific kingdom purposes. What follows is remarkable: in verse 5, the craftsmen report to Moses that "the people bring much more than enough." Rather than rejoicing in surplus, Moses issues a proclamation commanding the people to stop giving (v. 6). The materials already received were "sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much" (v. 7).
This reversal teaches a vital lesson about generosity. God does not measure blessing by accumulation but by alignment with His purpose. The Israelites' enthusiastic giving demonstrated their renewed commitment after the golden calf episode, but continuing to gather beyond necessity would have been wasteful stewardship. Application: We honor God not by giving more than the work requires, but by giving willingly and then trusting Him with what has been dedicated. Generosity must be balanced with wisdom and discernment about true need.
Bezaleel and his team crafted the inner curtains of fine linen, intricately embroidered with blue, purple, scarlet, and cherubim designs (v. 8). These ten curtains, each 28 by 4 cubits, were coupled together with golden clasps (taches) to form the tabernacle's inner chamber (vv. 10–13). Over these, they made eleven larger curtains of goats' hair (v. 14), coupled with brass clasps (v. 18), and finally covered with red-dyed rams' skins and badgers' skins (v. 19).
The layers represent increasing protection moving outward from the holy place. The golden clasps joining the innermost curtains suggest the precious nature of communion with God's presence, while the outer protective layers demonstrate God's care in shielding His dwelling place. Each material and color carried symbolic weight in Israel's worship. Application: Just as the tabernacle was built in layers, our spiritual lives benefit from layers of protection—God's Word, community, prayer, and faithful obedience guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
The tabernacle's structural integrity rested on acacia wood boards (shittim wood), each 10 by 1.5 cubits, set into silver sockets (vv. 20–26). The south and north sides required twenty boards each; the west side required six boards with additional corner pieces (vv. 23–28). Five horizontal bars reinforced each side and the western end (vv. 31–32), with a central bar running the full length (v. 33). All wood was overlaid with gold; all metal fittings—rings and bars—were also gold except where brass was specified (v. 34).
Application: The meticulous engineering reminds us that God cares about stability and permanence in His work. We cannot build God's kingdom on hasty foundations; solid structure—whether in doctrine, character, or community—requires careful attention to detail and proper support systems.
The inner veil separating the holy place from the holy of holies was crafted with the same fine materials and cherubim embroidery as the main curtains (v. 35). Four pillars of acacia wood, overlaid with gold and set in silver sockets, supported this veil (v. 36). The tabernacle's entrance featured a screen of needlework suspended on five pillars with brass sockets (vv. 37–38).
Application: The veil represented the separation between God's holiness and human sinfulness—a barrier that Christ's death would permanently tear away (Matthew 27:51). The entrance screen welcomed God's people to approach, yet reminded them to come with reverence and preparation.
Exodus 36 teaches us that God's kingdom advances through Spirit-empowered workers, generous hearts, faithful stewardship, and attention to excellence. We are called to offer our skills, resources, and time to God's work—not from compulsion, but from transformed hearts. Like the Israelites, we may sometimes need to be reminded that more is not always better; what matters
