Study Notes — Exodus 28
6 sectionsExodus 28 details God's precise instructions for the priestly garments that would set Aaron and his sons apart for sacred service in the tabernacle. These are not merely ceremonial clothes, but carefully designed garments laden with theological significance, each element pointing to the holiness required in approaching God's presence. The materials, colors, stones, and inscriptions all communicate important truths about intercession, remembrance, and the burden of representing God's people before Him. This chapter establishes the visual and physical reality of the priesthood—a divinely ordained office that would foreshadow Christ's perfect priesthood.
God commands Moses to set apart Aaron and his four sons—Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar—for the priesthood. The phrase "that he may minister unto me in the priest's office" emphasizes that priesthood is not a personal achievement or political appointment, but a divine calling. Notice that God specifies His filling certain craftsmen "with the spirit of wisdom" (v. 3) to create these garments. This reminds us that all skilled work in God's service flows from His Spirit. The five materials listed (gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen) represent both earthly wealth and heavenly realities—precious metals mixed with colors suggesting both royalty and redemption.
The ephod was a sleeveless garment or breastpiece that formed the foundation of the high priest's attire. Its two shoulder pieces bore two onyx stones engraved with the names of the twelve tribes—six names on each stone. This design carried profound meaning: Aaron literally carried the people of Israel upon his shoulders as he ministered before the Lord (v. 12). The stones, cut like a signet, indicated authority and remembrance. For believers today, this imagery prefigures Jesus Christ, our High Priest, who bears His people upon His shoulders with constant care and intercession (John 10:11–12).
The breastplate was a pouch containing the Urim and Thummim (v. 30)—objects God used to reveal His will and judgment. The twelve stones set in four rows corresponded to the twelve tribes, meaning Israel was brought before God's throne through their high priest's chest—literally upon his heart. Verse 29 emphasizes Aaron would "bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart...for a memorial before the LORD continually." The intricate fastening with blue laces ensured the breastplate never separated from the ephod. This speaks to the inseparable bond between the priest's intercession and the people's standing before God.
The blue robe worn beneath the ephod had a significant feature: golden bells and pomegranates sewn around its hem. The bells' sound would be heard when Aaron entered and exited the Holy Place. Verse 35 gives the reason for this detail: "that he die not." The bells served as assurance that the high priest emerged alive from God's presence—a sobering reminder that approaching the holy God without proper covering meant death. The pomegranates, symbols of abundance and fruitfulness, accompanied the bells in alternating pattern.
The crowning element was a golden plate engraved "HOLINESS TO THE LORD" worn on Aaron's forehead. This plate was essential because it allowed Aaron to "bear the iniquity" of holy things offered to God (v. 38), ensuring they would be accepted. God's holiness is His central attribute, and the priest must embody and represent it. Finally, all priests wore linen breeches to cover their nakedness, reflecting God's concern for dignity and propriety in worship.
While the Levitical priesthood has been fulfilled and completed in Christ (Hebrews 10:11–14), every believer is now part of God's "royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9). We don't wear physical garments, but we are clothed with Christ's righteousness, called to bear one another before God in intercession, and commissioned to represent His holiness in a watching world. Our lives should display the beauty of redemption and the seriousness of standing before an infinitely holy God.
