Study Notes — Exodus 12
7 sectionsExodus 12 records God's institution of the Passover, the most pivotal redemptive act in Israel's history and a powerful type of Christ's atoning work. On this night, the Lord will pass through Egypt, striking down every firstborn, but He will "pass over" the homes marked by the blood of a spotless lamb. This chapter establishes both the immediate deliverance from slavery and an eternal memorial feast that points forward to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The instructions are precise and urgent, reflecting the seriousness of God's judgment and the necessity of faith-filled obedience.
The Lord speaks to Moses and Aaron, declaring that this month—Nisan—shall mark the beginning of the year for Israel. This shows God's sovereignty over time itself; He is reshaping Israel's calendar around redemption. On the tenth day, each household must select a lamb without blemish, a male of the first year. The specificity here is vital: the lamb must be perfect, spotless, and young. If a household is too small, families may share one lamb, counted according to the number of people who will eat it. This speaks to both God's careful provision and the corporate nature of redemption—we are saved not as isolated individuals but as God's covenant people.
The lamb is kept until the fourteenth day, then killed in the evening. The blood is applied to the doorposts and lintel—a visible, blood-sealed sign of faith. The flesh is roasted with fire (never raw or boiled) and eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, representing the haste of departure and the bitterness of slavery. Nothing is left until morning; waste is not permitted. Verse 11 captures the posture: loins girded, shoes on, staff in hand, eaten in haste—the picture of a people ready to move, trusting God for immediate deliverance. This is no leisurely meal but an act of obedient faith.
At midnight, the Lord will pass through the land, striking every firstborn—human and animal—executing judgment against Egypt's gods. The blood on the doorposts becomes a sign that the Lord recognizes and protects His own. Verse 13 is the heart of the gospel: "When I see the blood, I will pass over you." Salvation depends not on human merit but on the blood covenant. This day is ordained as a perpetual memorial, a feast throughout all generations—emphasizing that redemption is not a one-time event forgotten but an identity-shaping truth to be remembered and celebrated forever.
For seven days, Israel must eat unleavened bread and remove all leaven from their homes. Leaven biblically symbolizes sin and corruption; its removal speaks to separation from the old life of bondage. The first and seventh days are holy convocations, with only preparation work permitted. This extended observance embeds the Passover not as a single night but as a full week of consecration, reminding God's people that redemption calls for ongoing obedience and separation unto holiness.
Moses calls the elders and gives them clear instructions. Using hyssop (a humble plant), they dip it in the blood and strike the lintel and side posts. Hyssop appears at Calvary too (John 19:29), subtly connecting this type to its fulfillment. Verse 27 promises that children will ask about the meaning, creating space for gospel transmission across generations. Verse 28 notes Israel's obedience: "Thus did they." Faith expressed in works.
At midnight, God's judgment falls. The Egyptians, stricken with grief, urgently beg Israel to leave. The people depart with plunder, a mixed multitude joining them. Verse 41 emphasizes: this happened at the end of four hundred thirty years, exactly as promised, proving God's faithfulness. The chapter closes with ordinances for foreigners who would join Israel—they must be circumcised, belonging to the covenant people before participating in Passover.
The Passover is Christianity's Old Testament foundation. Jesus is our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7)—spotless, willingly offered, His blood shed for our redemption. When we trust in Christ's blood, we are passed over in judgment. Just as Israel marked their homes with blood and were protected, our faith in the cross marks us as God's redeemed. Like the Israelites, we are called to remember this redemption, to live separated from sin (unleavened), and to share this gospel with the next generation, proclaiming that freedom in Christ is available to all who believe.
